(CBS) Here’s something to remember when you challenge Matt Damon: He’s no dum-dum. He’s probably smarter than you are. Damon was in Washington, D.C., Saturday to give a speech at the Save Our Schools March. (Damon’s mother, who introduced him at the event, is a teacher.) Pictures: Matt Damon A reporter and a cameraman for Reason.tv suggested to him that job insecurity should motivate actors – and by apples-to-oranges comparison, teachers – to be better at what they do. Damon’s face reveals he’s not buying the reporter’s questions as she asks it. “In acting, there isn’t job security, right?” says the reporter. “There’s incentive to work hard and be a better actor because you want to have a job, so why isn’t it like that for teachers?” “You think job insecurity is what makes me work hard?” asks Damon. “Well, you have an incentive to work harder, but if there’s job security…” says the reporter. Damon cuts her off. “I want to be an actor; it’s not an incentive. That’s the thing. See, you take this MBA-style thinking, right? It’s the problem with [education] policy right now. It’s this intrinsically paternalistic view of problems that are much more complex than that. It’s like saying a teacher is going to get lazy when they have tenure. A teacher wants to teach. I mean, why else would you take a sh**ty...

(CBS) – For Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, life has taken a dramatic 180-degree-turn. The couple, who made a nice chunk of change while starring on MTV’s “The Hills” and skyrocketed to tabloid fame with her plastic surgeries and his questionable publicity stunts, 홀덤바 say they’re broke and now living at Pratt’s parents’ house in Santa Barbara, Calif.,  because of the free rent. Pictures: Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt In an interview with The Daily Beast, the two talk about their short-lived reality TV career and share a few regrets. “We were living each other’s mistakes. Everything we were doing, in retrospect, was a mistake,” Pratt, 27, says. “The second we continued on our quest for fame was a mistake. This isn’t a business. That was the big thing I didn’t get: Reality TV is not a career. Anyone who says, ‘Oh, you can have a career in reality’–that is a lie.” As for the money, the duo say they burned through it all to help their image. “I probably spent a million dollars on suits and fancy clothes. My whole million-dollar wardrobe–I would never wear that again. They’re props,” Pratt says. “Everything we were doing, we were buying props. I bought a big blue monster truck just to drive it on ‘The Hills’ for an episode. Never drove it again.” Montag, 25, adds, “I thought I was investing in...

(CBS News) KABUL – Civilian casualties caused by the conflict in Afghanistan dropped 15 percent during the first six months of this year, according to a United Nations report, though the international body described these gains as a “hollow trend” and said the conflict in the country continued to take “an unacceptable toll on Afghan men and women.” “The United Nations welcomes the reduction in civilian casualties, but we must remember that Afghan children, women and men continue to be killed and injured at alarmingly high levels,” said Nicholas Haysom, deputy U.N. special representative of the secretary-general in Afghanistan. “I call on all parties to increase their efforts to protect civilians from harm and to respect the sanctity of human life.” More in Afghanistan: The way forward According to the report, there were 3,099 civilian casualties, including 1,145 deaths, during the first six months of 2012. Thirty percent of those killed or wounded were women and children. Official: 3 U.S. troops killed in AfghanistanTruck bomb injures U.S. soldiers at Afghan base The U.N. also warned that despite signs of improvement earlier in the year, civilian casualty figures have started to rise again in recent weeks. On Tuesday, nine Afghan civilians were killed when a remote-controlled roadside bomb hit a minibus. According to the U.N. report, 80 percent of the civilian casualties documented were caused by “anti-government elements,” killing almost...
