Later in life, Cassidy struggled with alcoholism and money troubles

David Cassidy, the teen heartthrob star of the hit “The Partridge Family” who went on to have a long show business career although he battled alcoholism later in life, is dead, his publicist said Tuesday. He was 67. Cassidy died surrounded by his family, his publicist said. Cassidy’s nephew tweeted that he didn’t think “I’m alone in saying that we will all miss him.” My uncle David Cassidy has sadly passed away tonight… & in the process of mourning I can’t help but thank God for the joy that he brought to countless millions of people! I don’t think I’m alone in saying that we will all miss him. God Speed! Cassidy said in February that he was suffering from dementia.  “I was in denial, but a part of me always knew this was coming,” he told People magazine about his diagnosis. His mother had suffered from the disease.  Cassidy was born in 1950 to singer and actor Jack Cassidy and actress Evelyn Ward. His big break came at age 20 when he nabbed the role of Keith Partridge, one of the singing kids of “The Partridge Family,” alongside his real-life stepmother Shirley Jones. envoy in Afghanistan before the Sept

(AP) UNITED NATIONS – Former Algerian foreign affairs minister Lakhdar Brahimi is a strong candidate to replace Kofi Annan as peace envoy to Syria, diplomats said Thursday. Diplomats who requested anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly said that Brahimi was a strong possibility, while other contenders are ex-Spanish foreign affairs minister Miguel Angel Moratinos and Spain’s Javier Solana, a former NATO chief and European Union foreign policy head. Annan, a former U.N. secretary-general, announced his resignation last week as joint U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria, ending a frustrating six-month effort that failed to achieve even a temporary cease-fire. He leaves at the end of the month. Russia and China have twice used their veto power to block strong Western- and Arab-backed action against President Bashar Assad’s regime. While he singled out the regime for blame for the escalating violence, Annan also said the opposition’s increasingly militant tactics contributed to dooming his six-point peace plan, which included a cease-fire and a Syrian-led political process to end the crisis. Annan did succeed in getting the Syrian government and its allies to at least agree to the plan. Brahimi, 78, served as Algeria’s...

The bombings sent panicked civilians fleeing for cover

(AP) AZAZ, Syria – Syrian fighter jets screamed through the sky Wednesday over this rebel-held town, dropping bombs that leveled the better part of a poor neighborhood and wounded scores of people, many of them women and children buried under piles of rubble. Activists said more than 20 people were killed. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 23 people died in the double airstrike and more than 200 were wounded. Mohammed Nour, a local activist reached by phone, 의령출장만남 put the death toll at 25. Neither figure could be independently confirmed. More in After the Arab Spring Reporters from The Associated Press saw nine dead bodies in the bombings’ immediate aftermath, including a baby. The bombings sent panicked civilians fleeing for cover. So many were wounded that the local hospital locked its doors, directing residents to drive to the nearby Turkish border so the injured could be treated on the other side. One person’s remains were bundled into a small satchel. A group of young men found a man buried in the wreckage of destroyed homes, his clothes torn and his limbs dirty, but still alive. “God is great! God is great!” they chanted as they yanked him out and laid him on a blanket. Nearby, a woman sat on a pile of bricks that once was her home, cradling a dead baby wrapped in a dirty...

ISAF spokesman Brig. Gen. Gunter Katz told CBS News the latest attack is, “tragic, but doesn’t reflect the security situation.” He calls the shooting an “isolated incident”. “We’re confident this won’t stop operations,” he said. “We trust our Afghan partners. But we’re looking at how to mitigate incidents.” White House press secretary Jay Carney said he didn’t want to “diminish at all the seriousness of the attack” but “it is important within the context here to recognize that missions … are being conducted ever day, every hour involving U.S. forces and the 330,000 Afghan forces.” He added that the U.S. military “believes that the operational impact [of the attacks] has been negligible.” The Afghan security forces have established an eight-point vetting process. Katz explained that recruits require two letters from local elders as a character reference as well as biometric, medical and drugs checks, but ISAF is still working with the Afghan forces to improve this process. Nonetheless, early in 2012, top U.S. commander Gen. John Allen ordered American units to select a “guardian angel” to watch over fellow troops, even as they sleep, at joint U.S.-Afghan bases and on joint operations involving live fire – a direct response to the mounting green-on-blue attacks. Last year, a U.S. Army team led by a behavioral scientist produced a 70-page survey that revealed both Afghan and American soldiers hold disturbingly negative perceptions of the other. According to the survey, many Afghan security personnel found U.S. troops “extremely arrogant, bullying and unwilling to listen to their advice” and sometimes lacking concern about Afghans’ safety in combat. They accused the Americans of ignoring female privacy and using denigrating names for Afghans. American troops, in turn, often accused Afghan troops and police of “pervasive illicit drug use, massive thievery, personal instability, dishonesty, no integrity,” the survey said. U.S. military officials have downplayed that survey. The U.S. hopes the Afghan Local Police, a village defense force backed by the national government, will become a key force in fighting the insurgency.

If you’re one of those extraordinarily disciplined souls who want every paragraph perfect before moving onto the next and end with a complete manuscript that needs no revisions, count yourself lucky and blessed. For most of the writing community, however, writing is a struggle to balance creativity and technical know how. Of course, one is just as important as the other, but to focus on technical know how at the muse stage, can be as frustrating as getting Superman to wear a kryptonite necklace.”Show, don’t tell.” We hear that phrase as often as Captain Marvel hears the word “Shazam!” It’s more than a mantra, more than a symbol of mystical, magical transformation it’s the heart and soul of great storytelling.
