He said the threat was delivered to Ecuador’s Foreign Ministry and ambassador in London

(CBS/AP) QUITO, Ecuador – Ecuador’s foreign minister is alleging that Britain threatened to storm his country’s London embassy to arrest WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Ricardo Patino told a news conference that Ecuador received a written threat Wednesday from Britain that “it could assault our embassy” if Assange was not handed over. He said the threat was delivered to Ecuador’s Foreign Ministry and ambassador in London. The Press Association reports Patino released details of the letter it got from the British Foreign office. The letter stated: “You need to be aware that there is a legal base in the UK, the Diplomatic and Consular Premises Act 1987, that would allow us to take actions in order to arrest Mr Assange in the current premises of the Embassy. We sincerely hope that we do not reach that point, but if you are not capable of resolving this matter of Mr Assange’s presence in your premises, this is an open option for us.” The Australian has been holed up in the embassy since June 19, taking refuge to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he faces questioning for alleged sexual misconduct. Assange’s supports say the charges are trumped up and believe the U.S. has secretly indicted him and would extradite him from Sweden. Ecuadorian officials have said they will announce Wednesday whether or not Assange will be given asylum. British authorities have said...

Donald Trump warns Russia and Iran over expected Idilb offensive by Syria leader Bashar Assad

WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday warned Syria against launching an attack on the country’s last rebel stronghold with the help of Russia and Iran, saying the offensive could trigger a “human tragedy.” Syrian forces are massing around the northwestern province of Idlib, in preparation for the assault. “President Bashar al-Assad of Syria must not recklessly attack Idlib Province. The Russians and Iranians would be making a grave humanitarian mistake to take part in this potential human tragedy,” Mr. Trump tweeted. “Hundreds of thousands of people could be killed. Don’t let that happen!” Moscow shirked the warning, as Russian warplanes carried out a number of airstrikes targeting rebels positions in Idlib province. London-based war monitoring group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), said it was the first time Russian strikes had targeted the northwestern province in about three weeks, but they were limited in scope; reportedly hitting rebel positions in uninhabited areas and 온라인카지노 causing unclear damage. There was no indication as of Tuesday that it was the beginning of a wider offensive in Idlib. More in Syria crisis A spokesman for the Kremlin in Moscow dismissed Mr. Trump’s warning about the looming offensive, saying it failed to address the root problem of “a nest of terrorists” in the province, where an estimated 3 million civilians also remain. Russia, like the Syrian government, refers to all...

The Lebanese are apparently held to try to pressure the government in Beirut to show greater support for the Syrian rebels — which is unlikely because of Hezbollah’s strong influence and backing of Assad

(CBS/AP) – Syria’s former prime minister received some material benefit after defecting last week – the U.S. lifted sanctions on him, unfreezing financial assets under American jurisdiction. Riad Hijab had been one of 29 senior Syrian government officials targeted by the Treasury Department in a round of individual sanctions back in July – a move designed to increase pressure within President Bashar Assad’s regime and hasten its downfall. Three weeks later, Hijab became the highest-ranking political figure to defect from the Assad regime, fleeing to Jordan with his family. On Tuesday, the U.S. lifted the sanctions against Hijab and 구리출장안마 urged other officials within Syria’s political and military ranks to join the steadily growing list of regime defectors. In his first public statements since defecting, Hijab said Tuesday that Assad’s government is on the verge of collapse morally and economically in addition to cracks in the military.” Syria’s defected PM Riad Hijab says Assad regime on “verge of collapse”Panetta: Syria no-fly-zone “not on the front burner”Rebels claim to shoot down Syrian warplane Hijab is a Sunni Muslim from the eastern province of Deir el-Zour where rebels claimed to have shot down an army MiG-23 warplane on Monday. Garfield said that future research should look into what makes a difference in which babies go on to perform well in school and which do not

Researchers say a new study should help ease the minds parents of premature babies when it comes to how well their children will perform in school. The report, published in JAMA Pediatrics, finds that babies born early often catch up to their peers academically. About 10 percent of babies in the U.S. are born prematurely — before 37 weeks of pregnancy, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “We know a lot about the medical and clinical outcomes [of premature babies] and we know some about short-term educational outcomes, but what we didn’t know is how the babies do once they get further out into elementary school and middle school,” the study’s first author Dr. Craig Garfield, associate professor of pediatrics and of medical social sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, told CBS News. The study found that two-thirds of babies born at only 23 or 24 weeks were ready for kindergarten on time. The researchers were surprised to see that nearly 2 percent of these extreme preemies even achieved gifted status in school.  Though extremely premature babies often scored low on standardized tests, preterm infants born 25 weeks or later performed only slightly lower than full-term infants. For babies born after 28 weeks, the differences in test scores were negligible. For the study, the researchers analyzed data on more than 1.3 million babies born...
