The runaway bestseller, “The Help,” is a look back at the relationships between white women and their black maids in Mississippi in the early 1960s

The runaway bestseller, “The Help,” is a look back at the relationships between white women and their black maids in Mississippi in the early 1960s. The book was written by Kathryn Stockett, and the film version premieres today. The author has sparked a lot of controversy because she’s white, yet wrote her novel from the perspective of an African-American housekeeper. If that’s not unusual enough, she let her best friend, a relative unknown, direct the film. Stockett’s explosive novel is set against the backdrop of the civil rights movement in the 1960s, a time of segregation and sit-ins, CBS News Correspondent Bill Whitaker reports. It’s the story of a rebellious Southern belle who collaborates with black maids to write a book pulling the covers off the complex, often painful relationships between a pampered, privileged class of white women and the black women who served them. “The Help” has been a bestseller for more than 100 weeks, and the movie has A-list actors, including Viola Davis and Emma Stone. Stockett and the film’s director, Tate Taylor, are lifelong friends who grew up in Jackson, Miss., raised by black housekeepers. “The Help” is her first book and his first major motion picture. Stockett reluctantly showed Taylor her manuscript after 60 literary agents had rejected it. Taylor said of her book, “You think you know your best friend so well, and I...

The rising tensions forced the city’s Beijing-backed leader, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, to call off his trip to a high-profile Asia-Pacific summit this weekend in Vladivostok, Russia

(AP) HONG KONG – The Hong Kong government calls it national education. But parents, teachers and pupils in the former British colony call it “brainwashing” and fear it’s a ploy by Beijing authorities to indoctrinate the city’s young into unquestioning support of China’s Communist Party. Plans by the government to introduce the classes have triggered mass protests and hunger strikes, the latest sign of the widening gulf between Beijing and the freewheeling semi-independent southern Chinese financial center, 15 years after Britain handed it back to China. The dispute deepened as classes started this week, with activists including a handful of hunger-strikers camping out in front of Hong Kong government headquarters in a bid to force officials to drop plans to introduce the subject in primary and secondary schools. They’ve been joined each evening by thousands of protesters wearing black. A local TV station fanned the flames when it called the activists a “destructive faction” controlled by London and Washington. The rising tensions forced the city’s Beijing-backed leader, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, to call off his trip to a high-profile Asia-Pacific summit this weekend in Vladivostok, Russia. The protesters are afraid of what they see as underhanded attempts to indoctrinate the city’s next generation with Beijing-style nationalist education classes used in schools all over China to inculcate support for the Communist government. Many believe Leung, who became the city’s leader...

There is still no decision on the matter” and that he was awaiting a report on the matter from his foreign ministry

(CBS/AP) QUITO, Ecuador – Ecuador’s foreign minister is alleging that Britain threatened to storm his country’s London embassy to arrest WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Ricardo Patino told a news conference that Ecuador received a written threat Wednesday from Britain that “it could assault our embassy” if Assange was not handed over. He said the threat was delivered to Ecuador’s Foreign Ministry and ambassador in London. The Press Association reports Patino released details of the letter it got from the British Foreign office. The letter stated: “You need to be aware that there is a legal base in the UK, the Diplomatic and Consular Premises Act 1987, that would allow us to take actions in order to arrest Mr Assange in the current premises of the Embassy. We sincerely hope that we do not reach that point, but if you are not capable of resolving this matter of Mr Assange’s presence in your premises, this is an open option for us.” The Australian has been holed up in the embassy since June 19, taking refuge to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he faces questioning for alleged sexual misconduct. Assange’s supports say the charges are trumped up and believe the U.S. has secretly indicted him and would extradite him from Sweden. Ecuadorian officials have said they will announce Wednesday whether or not Assange will be given asylum. British authorities have said...
