Researchers say a new study should help ease the minds parents of premature babies when it comes to how well their children will perform in school. The report, published in JAMA Pediatrics, finds that babies born early often catch up to their peers academically. About 10 percent of babies in the U.S. are born prematurely — before 37 weeks of pregnancy, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “We know a lot about the medical and clinical outcomes [of premature babies] and we know some about short-term educational outcomes, but what we didn’t know is how the babies do once they get further out into elementary school and middle school,” the study’s first author Dr. Craig Garfield, associate professor of pediatrics and of medical social sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, told CBS News. The study found that two-thirds of babies born at only 23 or 24 weeks were ready for kindergarten on time. The researchers were surprised to see that nearly 2 percent of these extreme preemies even achieved gifted status in school.  Though extremely premature babies often scored low on standardized tests, preterm infants born 25 weeks or later performed only slightly lower than full-term infants. For babies born after 28 weeks, the differences in test scores were negligible. For the study, the researchers analyzed data on more than 1.3 million babies born...

(CBS/AP) Anyone who was afraid they wouldn’t get a full dose of puppet nudity need not worry. Broadway plans to be open Monday night. Tropical Storm Irene had forced theaters to scrap a potentially lucrative late-summer weekend. “As of now, Broadway performances will play on Monday as scheduled, unless government authorities request otherwise,” said Elisa Shevitz, of the trade group The Broadway League. When the threat of Irene prompted city officials to shutter the public transportation system, theater producers threw in the towel for matinee and evening performances on Saturday and Sunday. Depending on the show, theaters lost revenue for up to four performances. It was the first time Broadway has shut down for an emergency since a city-wide blackout in 2003. It came as the city is flush with tourists and with schools mostly still out. The two dozen shows performed last week grossed just over $20 million and attracted some 217,000 theatergoers. While most Broadway shows traditionally run on a Tuesday-to-Sunday schedule, lately a number of shows have played Monday night, https://www.hxwbrap6a.online including “Chicago,” “Hair,” “Mamma Mia!,” “Rock of Ages,” “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.” Though both of Disney’s popular shows on Broadway “Mary Poppins” and “The Lion King” were previously scheduled to be off on Monday, they plan to be ready on Tuesday. “The decision to suspend this weekend’s performances...

WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday warned Syria against launching an attack on the country’s last rebel stronghold with the help of Russia and Iran, saying the offensive could trigger a “human tragedy.” Syrian forces are massing around the northwestern province of Idlib, in preparation for the assault. “President Bashar al-Assad of Syria must not recklessly attack Idlib Province. The Russians and Iranians would be making a grave humanitarian mistake to take part in this potential human tragedy,” Mr. Trump tweeted. “Hundreds of thousands of people could be killed. Don’t let that happen!” Moscow shirked the warning, as Russian warplanes carried out a number of airstrikes targeting rebels positions in Idlib province. London-based war monitoring group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), said it was the first time Russian strikes had targeted the northwestern province in about three weeks, but they were limited in scope; reportedly hitting rebel positions in uninhabited areas and causing unclear damage. There was no indication as of Tuesday that it was the beginning of a wider offensive in Idlib. More in Syria crisis A spokesman for the Kremlin in Moscow dismissed Mr. Trump’s warning about the looming offensive, saying it failed to address the root problem of “a nest of terrorists” in the province, where an estimated 3 million civilians also remain. Russia, like the Syrian government, refers to all opposition...
