(AP) BAGHDAD – Three bomb blasts shortly before sunset Wednesday killed 10 people north of Baghdad in the latest spasm of violence to grip Iraq. The blasts underscored the volatility of the country eight months after the last U.S. troops pulled out. Insurgents, led by the local branch of al Qaeda, are trying to re-establish themselves in their old strongholds and undermine the government. The first bomb went off Wednesday in Baqouba, about 60 kilometers (35 miles) northeast of the Iraqi capital. Police said two civilians and one police officer were killed, and five people were wounded. Minutes later, authorities said, a car bomb exploded at the entrance of the main market in Muqdadiyah, about 90 kilometers (60 miles) north of Baghdad. A second blast struck as police arrived on the scene. Police said the toll for both bombings in the town was seven killed and 26 wounded. Iraq: Gunmen kill 7 Shiites in targeted attack The bombs exploded shortly before the ceremonial breaking of the daily fast during the holy month of Ramadan, when families and friends gather for a sunset meal. Police said the Muqdadiyah market was crowded with shoppers who were buying last-minute supplies for the “iftar” meal. Baqouba and Muqdadiyah are both located in the province of Diyala, a former stronghold of al Qaeda’s Iraqi branch. The province is home to both Sunni and Shiite...

The runaway bestseller, “The Help,” is a look back at the relationships between white women and their black maids in Mississippi in the early 1960s. The book was written by Kathryn Stockett, and the film version premieres today. The author has sparked a lot of controversy because she’s white, 파주콜걸 yet wrote her novel from the perspective of an African-American housekeeper. If that’s not unusual enough, she let her best friend, a relative unknown, direct the film. Stockett’s explosive novel is set against the backdrop of the civil rights movement in the 1960s, a time of segregation and sit-ins, CBS News Correspondent Bill Whitaker reports. It’s the story of a rebellious Southern belle who collaborates with black maids to write a book pulling the covers off the complex, often painful relationships between a pampered, privileged class of white women and the black women who served them. “The Help” has been a bestseller for more than 100 weeks, and the movie has A-list actors, including Viola Davis and Emma Stone. Stockett and the film’s director, Tate Taylor, are lifelong friends who grew up in Jackson, Miss., raised by black housekeepers. “The Help” is her first book and his first major motion picture. Stockett reluctantly showed Taylor her manuscript after 60 literary agents had rejected it. Taylor said of her book, “You think you know your best friend so well, and...

(CBS/AP) With millions of e-reader devices being sold while the Borders chain is going out of business, books arriving this fall face a radically different market from just a year ago. But despite the popularity of e-books, the season’s biggest selling title may be available only the old-fashioned way. “The Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever,” the seventh of Jeff Kinney’s series about the trials of schoolboy Greg Heffley, arrives in November with an announced first printing of over 6 million copies and, so far, there are no plans for an e-book. The print run is greater than the combined totals for two other likely blockbusters: Rick Riordan’s “Heroes of Olympus” (3 million copies) and Christopher Paolini’s “Inheritance” (2.5 million), the fourth and final book of his “Inheritance” fantasy cycle. The “Wimpy Kid” series has more than 45 million copies in print and the new book has already reached the top 20 on Amazon.com. Independent sellers say customers have been pre-ordering “Cabin Fever” for months. “They’re like the ‘Harry Potter’ books in that they appeal to kids who don’t necessarily love reading,” says Peter Glassman, owner of Books of Wonder in New York. “And when you do that, you reach a tremendous audience.” The e-revolution so far has been more for the old than for the young. Officials at “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling’s American publisher, Scholastic Inc.,...
