Updated at 3:53 p.m. ET (AP) KABUL, Afghanistan – Suicide bombers launched multiple attacks in a remote corner of southwestern Afghanistan near the Iranian border Tuesday, killing policemen and shoppers buying food to break their daily Ramadan fast. A market bombing in northern Afghanistan brought the overall toll to 46 in the deadliest day for civilians this year. There were no claims of responsibility, but the attacks on opposite ends of the country the provinces of Nimroz in the southwest and Kunduz in the north came as Taliban insurgents and their allies step up attacks while international troops hand over security responsibility to Afghan forces. NATO plans to withdraw most of its troops by the end of 2014. There have been relatively few insurgent attacks in Nimroz over the past year. Tuesday’s bombings took place in the provincial capital, Zaranj, where three men wearing suicide vests detonated their explosives in different neighborhoods, provincial police chief Musa Rasouli said. At least 25 civilians and 11 police were killed, he said. (AP) BEIRUT Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah will transform the lives of Israelis to “hell” if Israel attacks Lebanon, its leader said on Friday, adding that the group would not hesitate to hit targets that would leave tens of thousands of Israelis dead. Speaking in a televised speech marking Jerusalem Day – an annual rally in support of the Palestinians – Sheik Hassan Nasrallah said only a few rockets fired by the group’s militia could cause massive casualties, given its well-planned target list. “Rockets are ready and directed at these targets,” he said. “We will not hesitate to use them, if we have to, at any point in time in the course of aggression against our country to protect our people,” he added. “Hezbollah cannot destroy Israel but we can transform the lives of millions of Zionists in occupied Palestine into a real hell,” the black-turbaned Nasrallah said. “We can change the face of Israel.” Israel braces for “heavy casualties” if it strikes Iran, sees month-long warSyria tensions spill over border to LebanonWatch: Ex-elite Iranian troop warns of global attacks The threat came as Israel is undergoing an increasingly public debate on whether to attack Iranian nuclear facilities, possibly triggering retaliation from Tehran’s allies such as Hezbollah. Athletes attending the London Olympics have the legal right to stay in Britain until November under the terms of their visas, but one of them has already declared that he intends to seek political asylum in Britain. “I still very much love my country and it’s the harsh conditions and lack of basic human rights which has compelled me to seek asylum,” Eritrean steeplechase runner Weynay Ghebresilasie, 18, told The Guardian newspaper in an interview published Wednesday. Ghebresilasie, who finished 10th in his first-round heat and did not advance, told the paper that he has become disillusioned with the worsening political conditions in his homeland.
