(CBS/AP) Hey, thanks for being a team player, George Lopez. Thanks for moving your time slot back an hour to accommodate Conan O’Brien. Also: It’s over. Lopez, who surrendered his TBS time slot to Conan O’Brien (remember, Conan wouldn’t surrender his time slot on NBC) and then saw ratings for “Lopez Tonight” slide, got a cancelation notice Wednesday. Lopez’s Thursday show at midnight will be the final one, the cable network said in a statement. Pictures: TV stars out of a job “TBS has reached the difficult decision not to order a third season of `Lopez Tonight,'” the network said, adding that it was proud to have worked with the “immensely talented comedian and entertainer.” TBS declined further comment. The decision was based not only on ratings but also the cost of the show, according to a person familiar with the production, who spoke on condition of anonymity because TBS hadn’t authorized public comment. A call to Lopez’s representatives was not immediately returned. The comic gave up his 11 p.m. ET time slot to make room for O’Brien, who joined TBS after leaving NBC’s “Tonight Show” over a time-slot dispute that ended up reinstating Jay Leno as “Tonight” host. The plan for TBS was to have a one-two punch of late-night shows that would particularly appeal to young viewers, but the results have been unimpressive and the cancelation unsurprising,...

“It was an alchemical thing,” Hart said. “It’s for other people to decide our fate in history, our place in the culture.” That is exactly why fans, followers and some of those who were in the inner circle of the Grateful Dead plan to travel to the University of Massachusetts for 토토사이트 three days in November. UMass is hosting an academic conference on all things Dead. It will feature panel discussions on topics as diverse as the band’s innovations in sound engineering, the symbolism in Robert Hunter’s lyrics, the sociological phenomena associated with the nomadic fans who followed the Dead from concert to concert, and the band’s reflection of the American culture throughout the 30 years they were making music. Jerry Garcia, whose death in 1995 also brought an end to the band, might have called this “Thinking Man’s Dead.” The university has labeled it “Unbroken Chain: The Grateful Dead in Music, Culture and Memory.” “We have the opportunity to do something a bit more unique than have a bunch of people sitting around talking about favorite concert memories,” said Rob Weir (no relation to Dead guitarist Bob Weir), a visiting lecturer at the school whose history classes on pop culture use the band as their fulcrum. More than 50 historians, authors, and critics are scheduled to participate, along with some who have a closer connection to the band,...

(CBS News) KABUL – By the end of 2014, the international military forces who have tried to secure Afghanistan for more than a decade will leave the country, and as they go, so too will many of the business opportunities granted by their presence. “The current economy is artificial,” Muqim Jamshady tells CBS News in his suburban Kabul home. Jamshady started his own company, Afghan Logistics, shortly after the Taliban regime was ousted almost 11 years ago. The current economy “has no foundation,” he says. “Much depends on the coalition forces. If they leave, the economy will collapse dramatically.” Hundreds of Afghan forces sacked, detained over insider attack fearsCan Afghan forces vet their recruits?U.S. halts training of some Afghan forces Much of Jamshady’s business depends on an international presence in Kabul. He runs a hugely successful logistics, rental car and taxi firm – services which are mostly aimed at the massive population of foreigners in the Afghan capital. He built his business from almost nothing, starting as an owner-driver and then spending his savings on a second vehicle, which his brother drove. Soon, there was a third brother driving a third car. Today he has more than 100 vehicles, a large complex of offices and his own maintenance facility. His wealth is apparent, but Jamshady is reluctant to disclose his real net-worth. Success here comes with great risk. As...
