“So they failed to produce the reforms which would have saved the day.” Perfectly valid analysis of political shifts in the Middle East

(CBS News) LONDON – Russian President Vladimir Putin has asserted that “some people want to use militants from al Qaeda… to accomplish their goals in Syria.” In a loosely veiled dig at the U.S. support for Syria’s opposition, Putin argued, “in that case, one should unlock Guantanamo, arm all of its inmates and bring them to Syria to do the fighting.” Putin was playing directly to his home crowd in the interview aired Thursday on Russian television. More in After the Arab Spring Old-school Russians love it when their president talks tough – especially to their old Cold War enemy. To them, Putin’s “some people” was a clear reference to Washington, and his reference to Guantanamo and – by extension – the costly invasion of Iraq, was a guaranteed crowd pleaser. Russia’s President didn’t say it in so many words, but he implied that America, the West, and their allies in the Middle East are backing violent Islamic extremists in Syria to bring down Bashar Assad in a policy blunder that’s bound to fail. There is a grain of truth here. Some al Qaeda fighters, or at least some militants claiming to be al Qaeda, have joined the armed Syrian rebel groups on the ground, and at least some of those men would be eager to establish a fundamentalist Islamic state in Syria after Assad. Is al Qaeda fighting...

Apple, Please, I’m Consumed With Subscription Fatigue

We’re heading towards a future where we rent everything, and it’s unsustainable. I’ve hit peak subscription fatigue. My wife has, I’ve, and many individuals I know have. We’re heading towards a future where we rent every thing, and it’s unsustainable. Right now I’m staring that day by day rent in the face and realizing I don’t assume I can hurdle it. It is a disturbing feeling. It’s a sad feeling. It’s one thing like the dystopian nightmares of George Saunders and Gary Shteyngart rolled into actuality. Super Sad True Subscription Story. With all the exhibits, the music, the video games, the magazines, the infinite apps, there is a restrict. Everyone has budgets, and monetary considerations, and ceilings. Maybe I can keep better monitor of my subscriptions with my Apple Card. But this glowing world of happy issues is a rentable luxury, and Apple’s not giving any clear sense of the best way to make any of it work along with your wallet. It’s not just Apple, although. It’s every little thing. The reveals I like come and go from companies I borrow. The albums I listen to are held in a cloud, and it is utterly transient. If I cease paying, I don’t have anything. The video games on online providers, in some circumstances, are gone when I’m done. Subscriptions to Office 365, or Adobe Creative Cloud. Subscriptions to...

“Leaving this to go on is going to create more sectarianism, more extremism and more spillover to the region, and the Assad regime is capable of anything to stay in power.” Brahimi brings a unique background and a wealth of experience to a task that many leaders and pundits have written off as impossible

(AP) UNITED NATIONS – After two decades as a diplomatic troubleshooter in hotspots from Afghanistan to Iraq, Lakhdar Brahimi firmly believes that every conflict can be solved. That conviction will be put to the test in his new job as the joint United Nations-Arab League special envoy charged with trying to succeed where his former boss Kofi Annan failed — bringing an end to the 18-month conflict in Syria. “I think his biggest challenge is convincing the international community to intervene and end this — whatever it takes, because non-intervention has a much higher cost than intervention,” Nadim Shehadi, a Middle East expert at London’s Chatham House think tank, said in a telephone interview Friday. “Leaving this to go on is going to create more sectarianism, more extremism and more spillover to the region, and the Assad regime is capable of anything to stay in power.” Brahimi brings a unique background and 예천출장샵 a wealth of experience to a task that many leaders and pundits have written off as impossible.
