(CBS News) UNITED NATIONS – With “acrimonious fault lines” between members blocking action by the United Nations Security Council on Syria’s escalating civil war, as a senior European diplomat put it to CBS News, the General Assembly came together Tuesday – for the second time – to shine a light on the issue and try to present a more unified front. More in After the Arab Spring Diplomats accused both President Bashar Assad’s government and the opposition of violating human rights. They pointed to the recent report that more than 100,000 Syrians fled their country in August alone. They called on nations to meet the appeals for humanitarian aid. In the end, however, and with great frustration, they threw up their hands. There is, after all, not much that the General Assembly can do. Syria opposition calls for “Marshall Plan” post-Assad100K fled Syria war in August aloneSyria: No talks with rebels until they’re crushed The U.N.’s hopes for diplomacy now rest with seasoned Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi, the global body’s new envoy to Syria, who has taken over Kofi Annan’s role as negotiator-in-chief after the former U.N. secretary-general quit the position having accomplished little. “The destruction is reaching catastrophic proportions,” Brahimi told the General Assembly’s 193 member nations. “The support of the international community is indispensable and very urgent.” Brahimi’s pleas came two days after he told the BBC...

Nixon.” The subject is Richard Nixon’s wife, Pat Nixon, but it’s not a biography, a work of fiction or creative nonfiction

(CBS/AP) With millions of e-reader devices being sold while the Borders chain is going out of business, books arriving this fall face a radically different market from just a year ago. But despite the popularity of e-books, the season’s biggest selling title may be available only the old-fashioned way. “The Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever,” the seventh of Jeff Kinney’s series about the trials of schoolboy Greg Heffley, arrives in November with an announced first printing of over 6 million copies and, so far, there are no plans for an e-book. The print run is greater than the combined totals for two other likely blockbusters: Rick Riordan’s “Heroes of Olympus” (3 million copies) and Christopher Paolini’s “Inheritance” (2.5 million), the fourth and final book of his “Inheritance” fantasy cycle. The “Wimpy Kid” series has more than 45 million copies in print and 먹튀 없는 토토 the new book has already reached the top 20 on Amazon.com. Independent sellers say customers have been pre-ordering “Cabin Fever” for months. “They’re like the ‘Harry Potter’ books in that they appeal to kids who don’t necessarily love reading,” says Peter Glassman, owner of Books of Wonder in New York. “And when you do that, you reach a tremendous audience.” The e-revolution so far has been more for the old than for the young. Officials at “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling’s American...

The comedy “Our Idiot Brother” won’t win any prizes, but its mellow vibe is a blessed relief

Here on the East Coast, most of us have little choice but to stay inside – and wait out the wrath of Irene. But elsewhere, you can go to the movies. David Edelstein has some recommendations … It has been a loud, 3-D summer at the multiplex, and while I’m perfectly receptive to the odd $150 million superhero picture, it wasn’t so odd this summer, it was the norm – and I’m ready for movies that aren’t in-your-face with a surcharge for the glasses. The comedy “Our Idiot Brother” won’t win any prizes, but its mellow vibe is a blessed relief. Paul Rudd plays Ned, a friendly, go-along-to-get-along screw-up of a brother to three high-strung sisters played by three appealing actresses: Emily Mortimer, Elizabeth Banks and Zooey Deschanel. Ned goes to prison after a cop in uniform approaches him to buy dope. Really! See for yourself: … No, stop the clip. It’s too painful. Anyway, when Ned gets out of jail he visits his sisters and messes up their lives by being too guilessly honest. He undermines their very foundations. This being a comedy, family ties strengthen rather than strangle. The uplift would be hard to buy if Rudd weren’t so lovable. I have no idea what he’s like in life, but I’d be stricken to hear he’s a jerk: It would be such an affront to the notion...

And they have to be working actors, singers who have made an impact the entertainment community

If you’re a Hollywood star, you can get a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame, right? Wrong. The folks who decide who’s in and who’s out on the walk say a certain kind of TV personality will never make the cut. For decades, CBS News Contributor Priya David Clemens reports, stars from the worlds of movies, music and TV have been immortalized with their very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Ana Martinez, a publicist associated with the Hollywood Walk of Fame Ceremonies, told CBS News, “The criteria for getting a star is longevity in the field of entertainment of five years or more, awards, Emmys, Oscars, Grammys, and philanthropic work that they do. And they have to be working actors, singers who have made an impact the entertainment community. However, sometimes the decision committee bends the rules. Stars were granted for Donald Duck, Tinker Bell and even Lassie. But you will never see stars for  “Jersey Shore”‘s Pauly D, “The Situation,” or Snooki. Pictures: Snooki’s Book Release Asked in a Facebook posting if reality stars would ever get a Hollywood star, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce said, “Hell to the no.” Martinez said, “I said no in certain words, and it became a little — it went viral, you could say.” So they’ve not only snookered Snooki, they’ve dashed the hopes of the Kardashians, and shut...
