But even the staid CMA is good for the occasional twist or two, and this year’s best bet might be Vince Gill, who’s nominated for album of the year for his ambitious four-disc set, “These Days.” The awards are scheduled for Wednesday night in Nashville; ABC is to broadcast them live. Gill wrote or co-wrote all the albums’ 43 tracks, co-produced them, sang, played guitars and assembled a dream team of guests including Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Diana Krall, Alison Krauss and Emmylou Harris. Even though it’s been a while since Gill has been a country hitmaker, he’s well-respected in the industry and could surprise. A single from the album, “The Reason Why,” a duet with Krauss, is also nominated for musical event of the year. “That’s not the type of music that you can mass-produce. It’s very thoughtful and appealing on a number of levels and deserves to be awarded for that,” Wade Jessen, director of country charts for Billboard magazine, said of the album. Other categories to watch are female vocalist where reigning country queen Carrie Underwood and upstart Miranda Lambert are up against stalwarts Reba McEntire, Martina McBride and Alison Krauss; and vocal duo, where perennial favorites Brooks & Dunn have stiff competition from Big & Rich, Montgomery Gentry, Sugarland and the Wreckers. Krauss, a contemporary bluegrass star, has four nominations in all even though she’s...

LOS ANGELES – After sparring for more than a year, Mel Gibson and his ex-girlfriend have reached a financial and custody settlement of a bitter dispute that spawned a criminal case and left the Academy Award-winner’s reputation damaged. Los Angeles Superior Court officials said in a statement late Friday that Gibson and Russian musician Oksana Grigorieva had reached an agreement after days of negotiation. Terms and conditions of the settlement were not announced, but a hearing Wednesday will be held to discuss the financial terms. The equally contentious issue of custody of the couple’s infant daughter will be handled in closed session, the court announced. Grigorieva spokesman Stephen Jaffe declined comment. The former couple has been at odds for more than a year over custody and financial issues in a mostly-secret court proceeding in Los Angeles. In June 2010, Gibson’s attorney, Stephen Kolodny, said his client had provided his ex-girlfriend with a four-bedroom, multimillion dollar home, vehicle and tens of thousands of dollars a month. It is unclear exactly how much Grigorieva has been receiving since then. The “Braveheart” star was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery as a result of a January 2010 fight with Grigorieva and pleaded no contest earlier this year. The actor-director...

Maslah Yare says pirates bundled Paul and Rachel Chandler into a car Monday and took them into a forest, soon after receiving word that al-Shabab fighters were approaching the town of Haradhere, a town on the Somali coast that is a pirate lair. Ahmed Salad, a businessman, says an advance team of militants entered Haradhere in two vehicles late Sunday. Somali pirates and 카지노사이트 insurgents are two separate groups. If al-Shabab, which is linked to al Qaeda, takes control of pirate strongholds, the pirates’ 300-plus foreign hostages could be in greater danger. The Chandlers have been held hostage for nearly six months and were seen pleading for help in a video released in January, though the video’s date could not be verified. British broadcaster Sky News aired the footage of 59-year-old Paul Chandler and his wife Rachel. The pair were heading to Tanzania in their yacht, when they were kidnapped by pirates late last October. In the video, both appear uninjured but frail and underweight. The couple claim that they’ve been separated and held in solitary confinement. They ask for help to pay for their ransom, saying they’re innocent people who’ve done no wrong. British Foreign Secretary David Miliband recently said the government won’t get involved in any ransom payments, but, he says the government can’t stand in the way of private citizens. “They kept asking for money and...
