(CBS/AP) KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan police officer shot and killed three U.S. Marines after sharing a meal with them before dawn Friday and then fled into the desolate darkness of southern Afghanistan, the third attack on coalition forces by their Afghan counterparts in a week. Thirty-one coalition service members have now died this year at the hands of Afghan forces or insurgents disguised in Afghan uniforms, according to NATO — a dramatic rise from previous years. U.S. officials told CBS News correspondent David Martin that the three slain troops were members of a Marine special operations force. Afghan sources in Helmand told CBS News Kabul bureau chief Fazul Rahim that they were part of a team overseeing the training and https://www.gndporjeg.online recruitment of Afghan local police. The sources said it was one of the police officers who opened fire on his mentors during dinner. Friday’s deadly shooting took place in the volatile Sangin district of Helmand province, said U.S. military spokeswoman Maj. Lori Hodge. Sangin was a Taliban stronghold for years and has one of the highest concentrations of improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, in the country. Sangin’s district chief and the Taliban both identified the gunman as Asadullah, a member of the Afghan National Police who was helping the Marines train the Afghan Local Police. (CBS News) UNITED NATIONS – Imagine: The Iranian U.N. Ambassador grooving to “All the Single Ladies” with Beyonce, at the same General Assembly podium where Col. Muammar Qaddafi once rambled on for hours and Nikita Khrushchev once pounded his shoe. Well, not exactly. Beyonce WILL be there tonight. It is not clear which ambassadors will attend (the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice, is on her way to the Olympics’ closing ceremony), but what we do know is that Beyonce will sing “I Was Here” to honor World Humanitarian Day on August 19. A music video of Friday’s event, produced by Ridley Scott & Associates, directors Kenzo Digital and Sophie Miller and the award-winning advertising agency Droga5, will be filmed of tonight’s performance. The objective: To get 1 billion people to view the video – and learn about the campaign. World Humanitarian Day Adding to the Beyonce glow will be other celebrities: American film producer Harvey Weinstein, Sean “Puffy” Combs (otherwise known as P. Ditty), designer Kenneth Cole, and some relatives of famous politicians, including Lauren Bush (the granddaughter of Bush 41 and niece of Bush 43). World Humanitarian Day was created to mark the anniversary of the August 19, 2003 bombing of the U.N. offices in Baghdad, which killed 22 people. The event is being organized by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), and Valerie Amos, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs. “I hope everyone will pledge to complete at least one humanitarian action – however great or small – through whd-iwashere.org, said Amos. “Together we can create an unprecedented awareness of the plight of people affected by crises around the world.” World Humanitarian Day spokesperson Kirsten Mildren told CBS News it is an occasion to honor “all humanitarian aid workers who have died, but it is also about people helping their communities after a disaster. Syria is obviously a priority right now, but this is a day to highlight small acts around the world, good deeds.” But, we wonder, will this normally staid group of diplomats shake a bit, dancing to the sounds of Beyonce, who looked quite conservative herself when the Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter-actress met with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at rehearsal? With deadlock in the Security Council on Syria, some are wondering if this could bring diplomats together. Mildren said, “I can’t imagine that anyone won’t be completely moved by this event. The General Assembly has never seen anything like this before. You will definitely see people up on their feet.”

“And that’s true for the youngest premature babies at 23 or 24 weeks and then as you go up in gestational age to 25 weeks and higher they are performing pretty similarly to full-term babies.” Senior author David Figlio, director of the Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern University, acknowledges concerns that very premature infants tend to score well below their full-term peers on standardized tests

Researchers say a new study should help ease the minds parents of premature babies when it comes to how well their children will perform in school. The report, published in JAMA Pediatrics, finds that babies born early often catch up to their peers academically. About 10 percent of babies in the U.S. are born prematurely — before 37 weeks of pregnancy, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “We know a lot about the medical and clinical outcomes [of premature babies] and we know some about short-term educational outcomes, but what we didn’t know is how the babies do once they get further out into elementary school and middle school,” the study’s first author Dr. Craig Garfield, associate professor of pediatrics and of medical social sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, told CBS News. The study found that two-thirds of babies born at only 23 or 24 weeks were ready for kindergarten on time. The researchers were surprised to see that nearly 2 percent of these extreme preemies even achieved gifted status in school.  Though extremely premature babies often scored low on standardized tests, preterm infants born 25 weeks or later performed only slightly lower than full-term infants. For babies born after 28 weeks, the differences in test scores were negligible. For the study, the researchers analyzed data on more than 1.3 million babies born...

Most were drowning victims

(CBS/AP) MANILA, Philippines – Philippine disaster officials were shifting Friday from rescue work to a massive clean-up of the capital following nonstop rains that left tons of muck and debris from floods littering the city. The torrential monsoon rains that began Sunday left at least 60 people dead in the worst flooding in Manila since 2009. More than half of the sprawling metropolis of 12 million was submerged at the peak of the floods, 온라인카지노 and schools and offices closed for days. About 2.4 million people in Manila and nearby provinces have been affected, forcing more than 360,000 to seek shelter in government-run evacuation centers, the Office of Civil Defense reported Friday. The sun was out for a second day Friday, and residents were hard at work fixing disheveled homes and stores in flood-hit communities that resembled a wasteland covered with mounds of mud-caked garbage. “It’s really an eyesore when we saw it from the helicopter,” said civil defense chief Benito Ramos. “There will be no more rescue. It’s now ‘Operation Cleanup.”‘ He said soldiers will be mobilized to help local authorities collect the debris that have clogged streets and waterways. Some of the displaced in still-crowded evacuation centers have begun to trickle back to their communities, where floodwaters have subsided, Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman said. Reservists will be assigned to help repack relief supplies for people still...
