(AP) HANOI, Vietnam — Alleged victims of Agent Orange in Vietnam are set to receive a controversial “detoxification” treatment developed by the Church of Scientology. Scientologists use the “Hubbard Method” — which involves saunas and vitamins — to try to cure drug addiction and alcoholism. The church set up a center in New York after the 9/11 attacks offering a similar service for first responders who may have been exposed to toxins. Many researchers have criticized the method as pseudoscientific and useless. A hospital official and state-controlled media said 24 people were at a Hanoi hospital on Thursday waiting for the program. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. The U.S. military dumped some 20 million gallons of Agent Orange and other herbicides on about a quarter of former South Vietnam between 1962 and 1971, decimating about 5 million acres of forest — roughly the size of Massachusetts. Dioxins in it have since been linked to birth defects, though the United States maintains there is no evidence of any link between Agent Orange and health problems among Vietnamese. “I hope my wife and I will fully recover completely and will not suffer after-effects to pass on to my descendants,” prospective patient Nguyen Xuan Anh was quoted as saying in the Viet Nam News daily. Environmentalists said it was sending the wrong message at a time when the rest of the world was struggling to reduce energy consumption and Hong Kong itself was often shrouded in a hazy polluted fog. “We welcome the filming of ‘Batman’ in Hong Kong, but why do we need to keep the lights on to make the backdrop? It seems like filmmaking is coming before environmental protection,” Gabrielle Ho, a project manager at conservation group Green Sense, told The Associated Press. “We believe producers are able to create the same effects via post-productions works, but instead they are asking us to turn on so many lights, wasting so much energy,” Ho said. October Pictures manager Chu Chen-on asked the building managers to have residents switch on all lights and signboards during the shooting period. The controversy is the latest snag for the Hong Kong production of the Hollywood movie. Earlier reports said a scene in which Batman was to drop from a plane into the harbor was axed after the movie’s producers found the water quality could pose a health risk. And concerns have been raised about the noise that planes and helicopters swooping low over the harbor would cause. It’s convenient and a staple in most kitchens, but a lot of canned food still contains a chemical linked to birth defects and cancer, CBS San Francisco reports. Bisphenol A, or BPA, has been removed from baby products, reusable water bottles and most toys. But the chemical is still being used in a lot of food packaging. The Center for Environmental Health recently tested more than 250 cans purchased at supermarkets and dollar stores for BPA. Researchers found nearly 40 percent contained the chemical. That’s down from 67 percent two years ago, but the number still concerns some experts. “It’s still much too high,” Charles Margulis of the Center for Environmental Health told CBS News. “We need to get it down to zero.” BPA is used in the linings of cans, but some studies show that low levels of the chemical can seep into the food. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says BPA is safe at the current levels occurring in food. But the state of California recently added BPA to its Proposition 65 list as a chemical known to cause reproductive toxicity. Margulis says there are a variety of potential health concerns. “BPA is known to cause birth defects, and it’s also linked to breast cancer, obesity and many other serious health problems,” he said. Margulis also pointed out that low-income Americans may be most at risk....
