Updated 11:36 PM ET (AP) VERACRUZ, Mexico – Tropical Storm Ernesto made landfall Thursday near the oil port city of Coatzacoalcos, killing two people as it moved inland and began weakening after drenching Mexico’s flood-prone southern Gulf region. Ernesto came ashore after spinning across the far southern Gulf of Mexico in waters dotted with oil rigs operated by the state oil company. The government closed its largest Gulf coast port, Veracruz, and the smaller ports of Alvarado and Coatzacoalcos. In neighboring Tabasco state, two fishermen drowned when the stormed passed through the area, Gov. Andres Granier told reporters. Diplomats who requested anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly said that Brahimi was a strong possibility, while other contenders are ex-Spanish foreign affairs minister Miguel Angel Moratinos and Spain’s Javier Solana, a former NATO chief and European Union foreign policy head. Annan, a former U.N. secretary-general, announced his resignation last week as joint U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria, ending a frustrating six-month effort that failed to achieve even a temporary cease-fire. He leaves at the end of the month. (AP) BAGHDAD – Three bomb blasts shortly before sunset Wednesday killed 10 people north of Baghdad in the latest spasm of violence to grip Iraq. The blasts underscored the volatility of the country eight months after the last U.S. troops pulled out. Insurgents, led by the local branch of al Qaeda, are trying to re-establish themselves in their old strongholds and undermine the government. The first bomb went off Wednesday in Baqouba, about 60 kilometers (35 miles) northeast of the Iraqi capital. Police said two civilians and one police officer were killed, and five people were wounded. Minutes later, authorities said, a car bomb exploded at the entrance of the main market in Muqdadiyah, about 90 kilometers (60 miles) north of Baghdad. A second blast struck as police arrived on the scene. Police said the toll for both bombings in the town was seven killed and 26 wounded. Americans have made major strides in reducing heart disease, but two new studies suggest one group — the poor — still lags behind. Risk of heart disease among middle-class and rich Americans declined 20 percent between 1999 and 2014, researchers said. But those levels changed little among the poor, who are as likely to have high blood pressure, to smoke and have other risk factors for heart disease and stroke as they did 15 or 20 years ago, the researchers found. “Adults in all income strata have not benefited equally from efforts to improve control of cardiovascular risk factors in the United States,” said Dr. Ayodele Odutayo, lead researcher of one of the studies. Public health must focus on reducing income disparities in cardiovascular risk factors, particularly blood pressure and smoking, said Odutayo. He is with St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. “This not only includes expanding access to health insurance, but also ensuring that insurance plans that cover adults with lower incomes provide adequate management and counseling related to cardiovascular risk factors,” Odutayo said. For the study, Odutayo and his colleagues used the 1999-2014 U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination surveys to collect data on more than 17,000 adults, ages 40 to 79.
