By Thursday night, it had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph (55 kph) and was 1,045 miles (1,680 kilometers) east of the Windward islands

Updated 11:36 PM ET (AP) VERACRUZ, Mexico – Tropical Storm Ernesto made landfall Thursday near the oil port city of Coatzacoalcos, killing two people as it moved inland and began weakening after drenching Mexico’s flood-prone southern Gulf region. Ernesto came ashore after spinning across the far southern Gulf of Mexico in waters dotted with oil rigs operated by the state oil company. The government closed its largest Gulf coast port, Veracruz, and the smaller ports of Alvarado and Coatzacoalcos. In neighboring Tabasco state, two fishermen drowned when the stormed passed through the area, Gov. Andres Granier told reporters. Granier said the storm’s strong winds ripped rooftops from several homes but residents refused to evacuate, fearing their possessions might be stolen. “People have chosen to stay in their homes and we are helping them,” he said. Coatzacoalcos, a major oil port, got seven inches (177 millimeters) of rain in the 24 hours before Ernesto’s center passed just a few miles (kilometers) away, according to Mexico’s weather service. San Pedro in the neighboring state of Tabasco had seen more than 10 inches (273 millimeters). “It’s raining intermittently. It rains, its stops, and then it rains again,” said Juventino Martinez, the civil defense chief in Coatzacoalcos. “We have some flooding, some water building up” on streets in lower-lying sections of the city. He said 40 shelters were ready but hadn’t been used...

He has repeatedly denied having ever ordered anyone to spy on others’ voicemails, while his former newspaper group has insisted that its journalists obey the law

(CBS/AP) The British hacking scandal has bled into another celebrity’s life as former Beatle Paul McCartney said he’d contact police over his ex-wife Heather Mills’ claim that her phone had been hacked. In comments to U.S. television journalists delivered via videolink from Cincinnati, Ohio,McCartney said that he would be in touch with law enforcement as soon as he was finished with his summer tour. “I will be talking to them about that,”‘ McCartney told the Television Critics Association in Los Angeles, just hours before a performance. Pictures: UK hacking scandal’s famous targets “I don’t think it’s great. I do think it is a horrendous violation of privacy, and I do think it’s been going on a long time, and I do think more people than we know knew about it. But I think I should just listen and hear what the facts are before I comment,” he said. McCartney is the latest celebrity to be dragged into Britain’s phone hacking scandal, which centers on allegations that journalists routinely eavesdropped on private phone messages, bribed police officers for tips and illegally obtained confidential information for stories. Until recently the scandal was largely been limited to the British arm of Rupert Murdoch’s media empire, but an allegation made Wednesday by McCartney’s former wife Heather Mills implicates the Trinity Mirror 고스톱 PLC group of newspapers, and CNN celebrity interviewer Piers Morgan, who...

ISAF spokesman Brig. Gen. Gunter Katz told CBS News the latest attack is, “tragic, but doesn’t reflect the security situation.” He calls the shooting an “isolated incident”. “We’re confident this won’t stop operations,” he said. “We trust our Afghan partners. But we’re looking at how to mitigate incidents.” White House press secretary Jay Carney said he didn’t want to “diminish at all the seriousness of the attack” but “it is important within the context here to recognize that missions … are being conducted ever day, every hour involving U.S. forces and the 330,000 Afghan forces.” He added that the U.S. military “believes that the operational impact [of the attacks] has been negligible.” The Afghan security forces have established an eight-point vetting process. Katz explained that recruits require two letters from local elders as a character reference as well as biometric, medical and drugs checks, but ISAF is still working with the Afghan forces to improve this process. Nonetheless, early in 2012, top U.S. commander Gen. John Allen ordered American units to select a “guardian angel” to watch over fellow troops, even as they sleep, at joint U.S.-Afghan bases and on joint operations involving live fire – a direct response to the mounting green-on-blue attacks. Last year, a U.S. Army team led by a behavioral scientist produced a 70-page survey that revealed both Afghan and American soldiers hold disturbingly negative perceptions of the other. According to the survey, many Afghan security personnel found U.S. troops “extremely arrogant, bullying and unwilling to listen to their advice” and sometimes lacking concern about Afghans’ safety in combat. They accused the Americans of ignoring female privacy and using denigrating names for Afghans. American troops, in turn, often accused Afghan troops and police of “pervasive illicit drug use, massive thievery, personal instability, dishonesty, no integrity,” the survey said. U.S. military officials have downplayed that survey. The U.S. hopes the Afghan Local Police, a village defense force backed by the national government, will become a key force in fighting the insurgency.
