There are no clear answers, however, and even fewer predictions about what the future may hold

Scientists fear tremors at the Eyjafjallajokull volcano could trigger an even more dangerous eruption at the nearby Katla volcano – creating a worst-case scenario for the airline industry and travelers around the globe. A Katla eruption would be 10 times stronger and shoot higher and larger plumes of ash into the air than its smaller neighbor, which has already brought European air travel to a standstill for five days and promises severe travel delays for days more. The two volcanos are side by side in southern Iceland, about 12 miles apart and thought to be connected by a network of magma channels. Katla, however, is buried under ice 550 yards thick – the massive Myrdalsjokull glacier, one of Iceland’s largest. That means it has more than twice the amount of ice than the current eruption has burned through – threatening a new and possibly longer aviation standstill across Europe. Katla showed no signs of activity Tuesday, according to scientists who monitor it with seismic sensors, but they were still wary. Pall Einarsson, professor of geophysics at the Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland, said one volcanic eruption sometimes causes a nearby volcano to explode, and Katla and Eyjafjallajokull have been active in tandem in the past. In fact, the last three times that Eyjafjallajokull erupted, Katla did as well. Katla also typically awakens every 80 years...

Somalia: Five Headless Bodies Found in Capital

No group has claimed responsibility for the killings, but al-Shabab has beheaded individuals in the past that it accused of spying for the U.S.- and U.N.-backed Somali government. Hardline militants in Somalia give out harsh punishments such as stonings and amputations to people it accuses of crimes. Militants have also banned movies and modern music, saying that those types of entertainment are un-Islamic. Islamic insurgents control much of Mogadishu and have been trying to topple the fragile government for three years. Somalia has not had an effective government for 18 years. Relatives and friends say the men have been missing for the last five days. “We suspect they were executed by al-Shabab militants because they had in the past received phone threats accusing them of helping to construct the former Somali parliament premise,” said a resident who spoke on condition of anonymity because of fears for his safety. The al Qaeda-linked militants consider any Somali who works for the fragile government or with the African Union as apostates. “To slaughter a human being as an animal is a flagrant and brutal violation against international law,” said Ahmed Mohamed Ali, the head of a Somali human rights group. “Those behind such remorseless and shocking attacks will be brought to justice one day.” Elsewhere, clashes in central Somalia killed 12 people, mostly combatants, residents said. The fighting pitted al-Shabab rebels against...

“I cannot, therefore, approve of ‘companion books’ or ‘encyclopedias’ that seek to pre-empt my definitive Potter reference book for their authors’ own personal gain,” Rowling said in a statement, released by Warner Bros

But writer J.K. Rowling and the maker of the Harry Potter films are suing a small publisher in Michigan over its plans to release a book version of the popular Lexicon Web site. In a lawsuit filed Wednesday in a federal court in Manhattan, Rowling claimed the print version of the Lexicon would improperly interfere with her plans to write her own definitive Harry Potter encyclopedia, one that would include new material not in the novels. “I cannot, therefore, approve of ‘companion books’ or ‘encyclopedias’ that seek to pre-empt my definitive Potter reference book for their authors’ own personal gain,” Rowling said in a statement, released by Warner Bros. The film giant owns all the intellectual property related to the Potter books and movies. According to the publisher, the book contains much of the same material already found on www.hp-lexicon.org, a fan-created collection of essays and encyclopedic material on the Harry Potter universe, including lists of spells and potions found in the books, 윈 토토 a catalog of magical creatures, and even a “who’s who in the wizarding world.” He described the book as a “critical reference work” and dismissed any notion that it could compete with any official encyclopedia written by Rowling. Rapoport said Vander Ark was a middle school librarian who started the Web site in his spare time in 2000, then watched its popularity grow to...

That is unlikely to change with this case, Falk says

THE HAGUE, Netherlands — The United States on Tuesday defended its re-imposition of sanctions against Iran as a legal and justified national security measure that cannot be challenged by Tehran at the United Nations’ highest court. U.S. State Department legal advisor Jennifer Newstead urged judges at the International Court of Justice to reject an urgent request by Iran to order the suspension of sanctions re-imposed by President Donald Trump in May. “The United States does intend, lawfully and for good reason, to bring heavy pressure to bear on the Iranian leadership to change their ways,” Newstead told judges in the court’s wood-paneled Great Hall of Justice. “We do this in the interests of U.S. national security as well as in pursuit of a more peaceful Middle East and a more peaceful world.” Iran filed a case with the court in July challenging the re-imposition. Tehran alleges that the move breaches a 1955 bilateral agreement known as the Treaty of Amity that regulates and promotes economic and consular ties between the two countries, which have been sworn enemies for decades. More in Nuclear Iran Washington argues that Tehran is attempting to use the 1955 treaty as a pretext to bring before the court a dispute over the 2015 agreement that imposed restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program in return for lifting most long-standing U.S. and international sanctions. The 2015 agreement does...
