LOS ANGELES — Pixar Animation remains undefeated at the box-office races. The Disney unit’s animated sequel “Cars 2” cruised to a No. 1 finish with a $68 million opening weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. That makes 12 wins in a row for Pixar since the company’s first feature film, 1995’s “Toy Story.” “It couldn’t be any better than that. What an unbelievable track record these guys have,” said Chuck Viane, head of distribution for Disney. Pictures: Summer Films 2011 “Cars 2” added $42.9 million in 18 overseas markets, giving it a worldwide total of $110.9 million. Domestically, “Cars 2” nearly matched the $68.1 million debut of Disney-Pixar’s “Up” two years ago, though it was well below the company’s record of $110.3 million for last year’s “Toy Story 3.” The original “Cars” had a $60.1 million debut in 2006, but factoring in today’s higher admission prices, it sold more tickets than “Cars 2.” Premiering in second-place was Cameron Diaz’s classroom comedy “Bad Teacher” with $31 million. The Sony Pictures release added $12.9 million overseas in about 10 countries. The previous weekend’s No. 1 flick, Ryan Reynolds’ “Green Lantern,” fell to third-place with $18.4 million. That was off a steep 65 percent from its revenues over opening weekend, raising the domestic total for the Warner Bros. superhero tale to $89.3 million. Both new wide releases came in ahead of industry...

(CBS/AP) KABUL, Afghanistan – The commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan said a militant attack on a lakeside hotel in which 18 people were killed was likely carried out by fighters loyal to the Haqqani network. The al Qaeda-linked group is based in Pakistan and regularly targets Afghan and coalition forces in Afghanistan, and conducts deadly attacks in Kabul. Late Thursday heavily-armed Taliban insurgents stormed the Spozhmai hotel at Qargha Lake, a popular weekend retreat about a half-hour drive north from the capital Kabul, and opened fire on guests inside. Most of those killed were civilians. The 12-hour long siege ended Friday morning, after Kabul police said five attackers had been shot and killed. More in Afghanistan: The way forward “This attack bears the signature of the Haqqani network, which continues to target and kill innocent Afghans and blatantly violate Afghan sovereignty from the safety of Pakistan,” U.S. Gen. John R. Allen said. Allen said that some victims were killed in their sleep. He added that the coalition provided “minimal support” at the Afghans’ request. 18 people killed in Afghanistan hotel siege Officials have told The Associated Press that U.S. military and intelligence officials are so frustrated with Pakistan’s failure to stop local militant groups from attacking Americans in neighboring Afghanistan that they have considered launching secret joint U.S.-Afghan commando raids into Pakistan to hunt them down....

“We kept attacking and the goals finally came.” Salpigidis added a consolation penalty for Greece in the 89th after Boateng handled

(AP) GDANSK, Poland – A trio of second-half goals put Germany into the European Championship semifinals for a record seventh time Friday after a 4-2 win over Greece. Philipp Lahm gave Germany the lead in the 39th minute before Georgios Samaras equalized for Greece in the 55th. But Sami Khedira, Miroslav Klose and Marco Reus all scored to pull Germany clear. “We made some silly mistakes but at the end we scored four goals,” Lahm said. “We had many chances in the first 10-15 minutes.” German Chancellor Angela Merkel made the trip for the match and stood to cheer every time her team scored. The match was played amid the political backdrop between the countries. Germany has been a major contributor to economic bailouts for Greece and was instrumental in demanding unpopular spending cuts. Germany dominated nearly the entire match at the Arena Gdansk, but the Greek defense held strong for much of the first half. Lahm finally put his team in front by controlling the ball with his chest and dribbling toward the middle before sending a long-distance shot into the corner off the hand of Greece goalkeeper Michalis Sifakis. The Greeks looked better at the start of the second half, and even equalized when Samaras knocked the ball past Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer after a perfect cross from Dimitris Salpigidis. “When we conceded a second goal we...
