Reus made it 4-1 in the 74th, volleying a shot in off the underside of the crossbar after Sifakis had saved from Klose

(AP) GDANSK, Poland – A trio of second-half goals put Germany into the European Championship semifinals for a record seventh time Friday after a 4-2 win over Greece. Philipp Lahm gave Germany the lead in the 39th minute before Georgios Samaras equalized for Greece in the 55th. But Sami Khedira, Miroslav Klose and Marco Reus all scored to pull Germany clear. “We made some silly mistakes but at the end we scored four goals,” Lahm said. “We had many chances in the first 10-15 minutes.” German Chancellor Angela Merkel made the trip for the match and stood to cheer every time her team scored. The match was played amid the political backdrop between the countries. Germany has been a major contributor to economic bailouts for Greece and was instrumental in demanding unpopular spending cuts. Germany dominated nearly the entire match at the Arena Gdansk, but the Greek defense held strong for much of the first half. Lahm finally put his team in front by controlling the ball with his chest and dribbling toward the middle before sending a long-distance shot into the corner off the hand of Greece goalkeeper Michalis Sifakis. The Greeks looked better at the start of the second half, and even equalized when Samaras knocked the ball past Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer after a perfect cross from Dimitris Salpigidis. “When we conceded a second goal we...

In the back bedroom, Dick instructed the male houseguests how to change clothes in the corner so that the cameras wouldn’t capture their genitals

(CBS/AP) For those of us who can’t get enough of living vicariously, there’s “Big Brother.” The CBS show began its 13th season Thursday night as eight new contestants and three veterans converged in the house. Pictures: Big Brother 12 Yet the audience didn’t get to eavesdrop on everything that happened during the first night of the summer-long competition. The edited hour-long premiere condensed what actually happened over the course of about six hours last Saturday when the 14 houseguests moved into the camera-filled house on a soundstage on the CBS Studio City lot. (The show’s live Internet feeds don’t broadcast what happens inside the house until after the show debuts.) Here’s some of what you didn’t see on TV: — Outside the door to the house, cocktail waitress Rachel Reilly and graduate student Brendon Villegas, who met last summer during season 12 and later became engaged, shared a quiet moment together as they waited to enter the not-so-private abode. “Don’t be nervous,” Brendon told her as they stood outside the door. “I’m not nervous,” Rachel retorted. — Among the declarations sputtered by outspoken season-eight winner Richard “Evel Dick” Donato after he returned to the house with his estranged daughter Danielle Donato was that he was proud of CBS for casting three black contestants. He also told the other houseguests that the producers only called him on the previous Sunday...

DALVAY-BY-THE-SEA, Prince Edward Island — Prince William enjoyed showing off his military helicopter training with his first-ever water landing Monday to the delight of anxious crowds in Canada, where he and his wife, Kate, have been on their first official overseas trip since their wedding. The Duke of Cambridge climbed into the cockpit of a Sea King helicopter for the military training exercise at Dalvay by-the-Sea, a scenic resort along Prince Edward Island’s north shore. Prince William, a Royal Air Force rescue helicopter pilot, requested the simulated emergency landing procedure. Dressed in an olive flight suit and helmet, the prince settled the large helicopter on the water several times. From the water, William piloted several take-offs and hovered in the air before executing dual- and single-engine landings before taxiing around as Kate watched from the ground. “He was looking for his wife on the shoreline at one point,” said Col. Sam Michaud, 42, who trained William. “She was waving back about 100 feet away.” Pictures: William and Kate on Prince Edward IslandWilliam, Kate baby rumors starting already Michaud said William is now fully trained. He said William remarked that the “boys back at his squadron would be absolutely jealous.” Canada is the only country that trains its Sea King helicopter pilots to do a controlled landing on water if there’s an emergency. The exercise William performed Monday is known...

Del Pino said he hopes to teach physical education and coach one day but prospects are grim for graduates now with cutbacks in education funding, teacher pay cuts and layoffs of temporary teachers

(AP) MADRID – Swathed in the red-and-yellow colors of Spain, tens of thousands packed central Madrid to give a hero’s welcome Monday to “La Roja” — the national soccer team that erased the country’s gloomy mood by winning the Euro 2012 Championship with such flair. With the celebrated team back home on native soil, it was time to party for a second straight night. King Juan Carlos and members of the royal family congratulated players at the Zarzuela Palace within hours of their returning from Kiev, where they crushed Italy 4-0 to defend their title Sunday night. The Iberia plane that brought them to Madrid bore the logo “proud of our national team.” Team captain and goalie Iker Casillas proudly held the tournament cup as he emerged from the plane in Madrid with coach Vicente del Bosque. In the palace gardens, the king, Prince Felipe, his wife, Princess Letizia, and one of the king’s two daughters, Princess Elena, chatted and laughed with the players while two of the monarch’s grandchildren gazed and touched the cup. Some distance away, a multitude took up places along a 3-mile route chanting “Champions, champions!” Blowing horns, they waited in the baking sun to catch a glimpse of their heroes who were to parade in an open air bus ride through the city for a victory rally in the central Cibeles plaza. The team’s...
