(AP) GDANSK, Poland – A trio of second-half goals put Germany into the European Championship semifinals for a record seventh time Friday after a 4-2 win over Greece. Philipp Lahm gave Germany the lead in the 39th minute before Georgios Samaras equalized for Greece in the 55th. But Sami Khedira, Miroslav Klose and Marco Reus all scored to pull Germany clear. “We made some silly mistakes but at the end we scored four goals,” Lahm said. “We had many chances in the first 10-15 minutes.” German Chancellor Angela Merkel made the trip for the match and stood to cheer every time her team scored. The match was played amid the political backdrop between the countries. Germany has been a major contributor to economic bailouts for Greece and was instrumental in demanding unpopular spending cuts. Germany dominated nearly the entire match at the Arena Gdansk, but the Greek defense held strong for much of the first half. Lahm finally put his team in front by controlling the ball with his chest and dribbling toward the middle before sending a long-distance shot into the corner off the hand of Greece goalkeeper Michalis Sifakis. (CBS/AP) For those of us who can’t get enough of living vicariously, there’s “Big Brother.” The CBS show began its 13th season Thursday night as eight new contestants and three veterans converged in the house. The edited hour-long premiere condensed what actually happened over the course of about six hours last Saturday when the 14 houseguests moved into the camera-filled house on a soundstage on the CBS Studio City lot. (AP) MADRID – Swathed in the red-and-yellow colors of Spain, tens of thousands packed central Madrid to give a hero’s welcome Monday to “La Roja” — the national soccer team that erased the country’s gloomy mood by winning the Euro 2012 Championship with such flair. With the celebrated team back home on native soil, it was time to party for a second straight night. King Juan Carlos and members of the royal family congratulated players at the Zarzuela Palace within hours of their returning from Kiev, where they crushed Italy 4-0 to defend their title Sunday night. The Iberia plane that brought them to Madrid bore the logo “proud of our national team.” Team captain and goalie Iker Casillas proudly held the tournament cup as he emerged from the plane in Madrid with coach Vicente del Bosque.
