Ilter Turan, a professor of political science at Istanbul’s Bilgi University, told NTV that Syria’s action was clearly “hostile,” even if it violated its air space

Updated 7:28 PM ET (CBS/AP) ANKARA, Turkey – Syria said Friday it shot down a Turkish military plane that entered Syrian air space, and 서천출장업소 Turkey vowed to “determinedly take necessary steps” in response. It was the most clear and dramatic escalation in tensions between the two countries, which used to be allies before the Syrian revolt began in March 2011. Turkey has become one of the strongest critics of the Syrian regime’s brutal response to the country’s uprising. Earlier, CBS News correspondent David Martin reported U.S. officials confirmed that Syrian air defenses shot down a Turkish jet off the coast of Syria. The circumstances of the incident remain unclear. The jet — a Vietnam-era F-4 — was supposed to be on a routine training mission over the eastern Mediterranean. Late Friday, Syria’s state-run news agency, SANA, said the military spotted an “unidentified aerial target” that was flying at a low altitude and at a high speed. “The Syrian anti-air defenses counteracted with anti-aircraft artillery, hitting it directly,” SANA said. “The target turned out to be a Turkish military plane that entered Syrian airspace and was dealt with according to laws observed in such cases.” Turkey issued a statement Friday night following a two-hour security meeting led by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, saying Syrian forces downed the plane and that the two Turkish pilots remain missing. (CBS) Sarah Palin blasted Hollywood stars as being “full of hate” after the premiere of “The Undefeated,” a documentary about the former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate. The first 10 minutes of the film features a montage of some of those stars – Matt Damon, David Letterman, Madonna, Howard Stern, Bill Maher and Louis C.K. among them – maligning Palin, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “What would make someone be so full of hate?” she asked THR when they caught up with her after the screening. She told them it was the first time she had seen much of that footage. “It kind of takes you back,” she said. “It makes you want to reach out to some of these folks and say, ‘What’s your problem?’ And what was the problem? And what is the problem?” Palin added, “What would make a celebrity, like you saw on screen, so hate someone that they’d seek their destruction, their death, the death of their children? What would make someone be so full of hate and, I guess, a sense of being threatened that they would want to see that person destroyed?” The documentary, according to THR, opens with the celebrity montage and then moves to footage of Palin as a child. Then, it focuses on her time as Alaska’s governor and her selection as John McCain’s running mate for the 2008...

Khedira volleyed in a cross from Jerome Boateng in the 61st, and Klose headed in a free kick from Mesut Oezil in the 68th as Sifakis was late to punch the ball away

(AP) GDANSK, Poland – A trio of second-half goals put Germany into the European Championship semifinals for a record seventh time Friday after a 4-2 win over Greece. Philipp Lahm gave Germany the lead in the 39th minute before Georgios Samaras equalized for Greece in the 55th. But Sami Khedira, Miroslav Klose and Marco Reus all scored to pull Germany clear. “We made some silly mistakes but at the end we scored four goals,” Lahm said. “We had many chances in the first 10-15 minutes.” German Chancellor Angela Merkel made the trip for the match and stood to cheer every time her team scored. The match was played amid the political backdrop between the countries. Germany has been a major contributor to economic bailouts for Greece and was instrumental in demanding unpopular spending cuts. Germany dominated nearly the entire match at the Arena Gdansk, but the Greek defense held strong for much of the first half. Lahm finally put his team in front by controlling the ball with his chest and dribbling toward the middle before sending a long-distance shot into the corner off the hand of Greece goalkeeper Michalis Sifakis. The Greeks looked better at the start of the second half, and even equalized when Samaras knocked the ball past Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer after a perfect cross from Dimitris Salpigidis. “When we conceded a second goal we...

(CBS News) There are reports of concern over another terror plot involving Al Qaeda targeting a U.S. airliner. Sources say that the bomber that Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has recruited is a Norwegian convert to Islam, who is believed to be in his thirties, with no criminal record. The Times of London reports that the airliner attack is believed to be timed to the upcoming Olympics, though a U.K. intelligence official told the paper that the plot would be pursued regardless of the London Games: “The only thing that connects this to the Olympics is the fact that they are about to happen,” the official said. An earlier AQAP plot to blow up a plane was foiled two months ago when a man working with British intelligence infiltrated the group and volunteered to be a suicide bomber – then delivered the bomb to intelligence officials. More in Terrorism in the U.S. CBS News senior correspondent John Miller, a former Deputy Director of National Intelligence, said that despite foiled bomb plots targeting airliners, al Qaeda has not lost its fascination with commercial aviation – and that AQAP (al Qaeda’s branch based in Yemen) has been specifically assigned to find a way to blow up a U.S. plane. “They were the architects of the first underwear bomb, they were the architects of the ingenious printer bomb which was...
