— As the cast settled into the house, crew members were busy constructing the setting for the first Head of Household competition in the backyard: a makeshift jungle composed of leafy plants and big hanging bananas that were greased up by the crew

(CBS/AP) For those of us who can’t get enough of living vicariously, there’s “Big Brother.” The CBS show began its 13th season Thursday night as eight new contestants and three veterans converged in the house. Pictures: Big Brother 12 Yet the audience didn’t get to eavesdrop on everything that happened during the first night of the summer-long competition. The edited hour-long premiere condensed what actually happened over the course of about six hours last Saturday when the 14 houseguests moved into the camera-filled house on a soundstage on the CBS Studio City lot. (The show’s live Internet feeds don’t broadcast what happens inside the house until after the show debuts.) Here’s some of what you didn’t see on TV: — Outside the door to the house, cocktail waitress Rachel Reilly and graduate student Brendon Villegas, who met last summer during season 12 and later became engaged, shared a quiet moment together as they waited to enter the not-so-private abode. “Don’t be nervous,” Brendon told her as they stood outside the door. “I’m not nervous,” Rachel retorted. — Among the declarations sputtered by outspoken season-eight winner Richard “Evel Dick” Donato after he returned to the house with his estranged daughter Danielle Donato was that he was proud of CBS for casting three black contestants. He also told the other houseguests that the producers only called him on the previous Sunday...

The al Qaeda-linked militants consider any Somali who works for the fragile government or with the African Union as apostates

No group has claimed responsibility for the killings, but al-Shabab has beheaded individuals in the past that it accused of spying for the U.S.- and U.N.-backed Somali government. Hardline militants in Somalia give out harsh punishments such as stonings and amputations to people it accuses of crimes. Militants have also banned movies and modern music, saying that those types of entertainment are un-Islamic. Islamic insurgents control much of Mogadishu and have been trying to topple the fragile government for three years. Somalia has not had an effective government for 18 years. Relatives and friends say the men have been missing for the last five days. “We suspect they were executed by al-Shabab militants because they had in the past received phone threats accusing them of helping to construct the former Somali parliament premise,” said a resident who spoke on condition of anonymity because of fears for his safety. He said border violations in the region were not uncommon and Syrian helicopters had violated Turkish airspace five times recently without a Turkish response

(AP) ANKARA, Turkey – Turkey warned Tuesday that any Syrian military unit approaching its border will be treated as a direct threat, a serious escalation in tensions days after Syria shot a Turkish military plane out of the sky. Turkey’s NATO allies expressed solidarity with Ankara and condemned the Syrian attack but made no mention of any retaliatory action against Syria. “The rules of engagement of the Turkish Armed Forces have changed,” Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a televised speech. “Any military element that approaches the Turkish border from Syria and poses a security risk and danger will be regarded as a threat and treated as a military target.” “No one should be deceived by our cool-headed stance,” Erdogan added. “Our acting with common sense should not be perceived as a weakness.” Special Section: The Arab SpringCondoleezza Rice calls on U.S. to arm Syria rebelsActivists: Fierce clashes on Assad’s doorstep Syria insists the Turkish military plane violated its air space on Friday.
