The company will seek FDA approval based on these results

Several drugs are scoring big wins against common cancers, setting new standards for how to treat many prostate, breast and lung tumors. There’s even a “uni-drug” that may fight many forms of the disease. What’s especially striking: The drugs are beneficial in some cases for more than a year, much longer than the few months many new drugs provide.  Here are some highlights from the world’s largest cancer meeting, the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference in Chicago: Janssen Biotech’s Zytiga improved survival and delayed cancer growth for 18 months when added to standard care in a study of 1,200 men with advanced prostate cancer. The drug is approved to treat tumors that are resistant to hormone therapy; this study tested it as an initial treatment. More in Cancer The study was stopped early because men on Zytiga were living longer — 66 percent were alive after three years versus 49 percent of a comparison group not given the drug. Zytiga also delayed the time until cancer worsened — 33 months versus 15 months for the others. In a second study of 1,900 men newly diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, adding Zytiga to usual treatment also improved survival: 83 percent were alive at three years versus 76 percent of men not given the drug. Zytiga also cut the chance of relapse and serious bone problems. Zytiga caused more side...

“Wild-picked mushrooms should be evaluated by a trained mycologist [fungi expert] before ingestion,” according to the report published in the June 2 issue of the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report

A bumper crop of deadly wild “death cap” mushrooms in northern California is likely to blame for the poisonings of 14 people in December, health officials say. The culprit: Amanita phalloides, believed to be the world’s most dangerous mushroom. All 14 recovered, but three required liver transplants, and a toddler suffered permanent brain damage, the researchers reported. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that anyone picking wild mushrooms have them evaluated by a specialist before eating them. “Wild-picked mushrooms should be evaluated by a trained mycologist [fungi expert] before ingestion,” according to the report published in the June 2 issue of the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. “Inexperienced foragers should be strongly discouraged from eating any wild mushrooms,” wrote Dr. Kathy Vo, of the University of California, San Francisco’s department of emergency medicine, and colleagues. The 14 people described in the report had eaten wild mushrooms they picked themselves or received from others. In previous years, the California Poison Control System had only received a few reports of mushroom poisonings each year. The large outbreak may be related to a reported increase in the growth of wild mushrooms in 2016, triggered by greater rainfall and 계룡출장만남 warm weather at the end of northern California’s autumn. “Although weather conditions and increased numbers of A. phalloides poisonings do not prove a cause-and-effect relationship, early seasonal rainfall and warmer subsequent temperatures made...

Last December, about 200 asylum seekers were feared drowned after their overcrowded ship sank off Indonesia’s main island of Java

(AP) CANBERRA, Australia – Ships and aircraft were searching Friday for scores of men missing after a steel-hull fishing boat carrying about 200 suspected asylum seekers bound for 천안출장샵 Australia capsized in heavy seas south of Indonesia. Four Indonesian and Australian warships, four merchant ships and five Australian government aircraft had joined the search in 7-foot swells, Australian Maritime Safety Authority spokeswoman Jo Meehan said. Around 90 people, all male, were missing since Thursday’s accident. An Australian navy patrol boat and three cargo ships had rescued 110 survivors — including a 13-year-old boy — by late Thursday and delivered them to the Australian territory of Christmas Island 120 miles to the south early Friday, Meehan said. Three bodies also were recovered. “The vast majority of the survivors are healthy and won’t need medical attention,” Meehan said. It wasn’t clear where the passengers were from, but most asylum seekers trying to reach Australia are fleeing violence and poverty in nations such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran or Sri Lanka. Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said while seas were rough, people could have survived if they had life jackets or were clinging to debris as most survivors had done. “There is the prospect that there are people out there still alive,” he told reporters. He said about 40 survivors had been found clinging to the upturned hull on Thursday afternoon, while others...
