The military is fighting a violent insurgency in the tribal areas near the border with Afghanistan

(AP) ISLAMABAD – Pakistani lawmakers elected a ruling party loyalist as the new prime minister Friday, despite corruption allegations and his failure to end the country’s energy crisis — setting in motion what is likely to be a short and turbulent premiership. The election of Raja Pervaiz Ashraf is unlikely to reduce tensions among Pakistan’s jostling power centers that are destabilizing the nuclear-armed country, which is considered crucial to American hopes of winding down the war in neighboring Afghanistan. The latest round of turmoil was triggered earlier this week when judges at the activist Supreme Court disqualified former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani for refusing to initiate a corruption investigation against his boss, President Asif Ali Zardari. Neither showed any signs of bending

(AP) JERUSALEM – Israel’s prime minister on Tuesday moved to contain the first major crisis in his newly expanded coalition government after his most significant partner threatened to quit in a dispute over how to overhaul the country’s military draft. Benjamin Netanyahu is rushing to meet an Aug. 1 court deadline to end a contentious system that has exempted tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews from serving in the army. The explosive issue is threatening to drive Netanyahu’s new coalition partner, Kadima, out of the government. Kadima, led by Shaul Mofaz, a former military chief of staff, joined the coalition just two months ago with the aim of reforming the draft. “If Netanyahu doesn’t keep his promises, then the crisis is going to be severe and there won’t be a partnership. There’s no middle ground here,” Mofaz told the Yediot Ahronot daily. Mitt Romney to visit Israel this summer The issue of the exemptions has become a major point of division in Israeli society. Under a long-standing arrangement, ultra-Orthodox seminary students are permitted to skip mandatory military service in order to pursue religious studies. (CBS) Five years after the release of “Cars,” the warm and fuzzy fleet is back, but this time, with some notable high octane additions in “Cars 2.” Not only are the cars cooler, the story line is too. Conceptualized by John Lasseter (co-founder of Pixar) and directed by Brad Lewis and Dan Fogelman, the crew clearly made it their mission to switch this sequel to the 2006 original into high gear. What they’ve come up with is a new, upgraded model they are banking on to be a big winner. The story is actually quite complex for young kids, but allows for more action and hijinks among the automobiles we’ve come to love. Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) returns as the speedy dirt racer with a heart of gold and by his side is his faithful sidekick, Mater (Larry The Cable Guy), a beat-up old tow truck. Back home in Radiator Springs after the racing season is over Lightning is looking forward to some down time and being able to catch up with his “girlfriend,” a cute little Carrera named Sally (Bonnie Hunt). Things take a turn at the drive-in, when he is egged into competing in the World Grand Prix by slick, open-wheeled racer Francesco Bernoulli (John Turturro). With Mater and his pit crew in tow, Lightning races to the finish, traversing the globe as he does so, with...
