(CBS News) As the fighting in the Syrian civil war that has claimed an estimated 16,000 victims moves to Damascus – the capital and home to President Bashar al-Assad – the conflict has become more sustained and widespread. Additionally, the intelligence reports that the Assad government appeared to be moving chemical weapons from storage facilities has raised alarm signals in Washington and in Syria’s neighbors. (CBS/AP) BEIRUT, Lebanon – The Syrian regime acknowledged for the first time Monday that it possessed stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons and said it will only use them in case of a foreign attack and never internally against its own citizens. Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said the stockpiles are secure, in an apparent response to widespread international concerns that they could fall into the hands of the disparate bands of rebel forces fighting the government. “No chemical or biological weapons will ever be used, and I repeat, will never be used, during the crisis in Syria no matter what the developments inside Syria,” he said in conference broadcast on state TV. “All of these types of weapons are in storage and under security and the direct supervision of the Syrian armed forces and will never be used unless Syria is exposed to external aggression.” Syria is believed to have nerve agents as well as mustard gas, Scud missiles capable of delivering these lethal chemicals and a variety of advanced conventional arms, including anti-tank rockets and late-model portable anti-aircraft missiles. African-American men are more likely to get prostate cancer, are diagnosed at more advanced stages, and are twice as likely to die as Caucasian men. But why? A new study that looks at perceptions about prostate cancer treatment among black and white men may help medical experts zero in on some of the reasons — and develop strategies to address them. Among other differences, the survey of prostate cancer patients found “more black men were concerned about the impact that treatment would have on their daily activities, the cost of treatment, and the time it would take to both go through the treatment as well as to recover from it,” the researchers said. Those priorities may have an impact on the types of treatment men choose and their ultimate health outcomes. More than 161,000 men in the U.S. are expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, and according to the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the risk is 74 percent higher in black men than in non-Hispanic whites.
