(CBS News) KABUL – Civilian casualties caused by the conflict in Afghanistan dropped 15 percent during the first six months of this year, according to a United Nations report, though the international body described these gains as a “hollow trend” and said the conflict in the country continued to take “an unacceptable toll on Afghan men and women.” “The United Nations welcomes the reduction in civilian casualties, but we must remember that Afghan children, women and men continue to be killed and injured at alarmingly high levels,” said Nicholas Haysom, deputy U.N. special representative of the secretary-general in Afghanistan. “I call on all parties to increase their efforts to protect civilians from harm and to respect the sanctity of human life.” More in Afghanistan: The way forward According to the report, there were 3,099 civilian casualties, including 1,145 deaths, during the first six months of 2012. Updated 12:32 p.m. ET (CBS/AP) At least six security checkpoints in Egypt along the border with Israel were attacked Tuesday, just two days after 16 Egyptian soldiers were killed in similar attacks, according to Egyptian media. State-run media reports 20 people were killed after the Egyptian military launched an aerial assault on the attackers, according to Reuters. Egyptian security officials and residents say Egyptian military attack helicopters fired missiles on suspected Islamic militants.
