(AP) BEIRUT – Armed Shiite clansmen in Lebanon said Wednesday they had captured more than 20 Syrians and will hold them until one of their relatives seized by rebels inside Syria is freed. The tensions were a stark reminder of how easily Syria’s civil war could spill over to neighboring states. In Geneva, a U.N. investigation said Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces and pro-government militiamen were responsible for war crimes during a May bloodbath in the village of Houla that killed more than 100 civilians, nearly half of them children. It also said rebels were blamed for war crimes in at least three other killings. The report by the U.N. Human Rights Council said the scale of the Houla carnage indicated “involvement at the highest levels” of Syria’s military and government. It is first time the U.N. has described events in Syria’s civil war as war crimes and could be used in possible future prosecution against Assad or others. The council also said the conflict is moving in increasingly “brutal” directions on both sides. In a way, it’s survived stormy seas. More than 10 tons of mail had been held in Jordan since 2010 because Israel — which controls the West Bank’s borders — wouldn’t allow its transfer. Postman Ramadam Ghazawy now acts as an investigator, piecing together addresses faded by time. “Some of them were damaged. Some of them have no identifiers or addresses,” he said. “It takes for me and my colleagues maybe two weeks. (CBS News) The rapidly deteriorating situation in Syria is directly affecting all of its neighbors, including the kingdom of Jordan. The King of Jordan, Abdullah II, who has ruled Jordan since the death of his father King Hussein in 1999, told “CBS This Morning” that Syria’s president Bashar Assad will continue to “stick to his guns” indefinitely. “He believes that he is in the right,” Abdullah told Charlie Rose in Amman on Sunday. “I think the regime feels that it has no alternative, but to continue. … I don’t think it’s just Bashar. It’s not the individual. It’s the system of the regime. So if Bashar was to exit under whatever circumstances, does whoever replace him, have the ability to reach out and transform Syria politically? So for Bashar, at the moment, if I if I’m reading the way he’s thinking, is he’s going do what he’s going to do indefinitely.” Though he thinks there’s still hope, Abdullah said, “I’m worried about the longer we take to find a political solution and the more the chaos continues then we may be pushing Syria into the abyss.
