(AP) MOSCOW President Vladimir Putin says Russia can work with Mitt Romney if he’s elected U.S. president, even though Romney has called Russia the United States’ “No. 1 geopolitical foe.” In an interview broadcast Thursday by the Kremlin-funded Russia Today TV channel, Putin made his first direct comments about the Republican challenger to President Barack Obama. Romney keeps up strong rhetoric on Russia “We’ll work with whichever president is elected by the American people. But our effort will be only as efficient as our partners will want it to be,” Putin said. Putin expressed concern about how a Romney presidency would affect the long-running dispute over U.S.-led NATO plans to place elements of a missile-defense system in Europe. Russia contends the system could undermine its own defenses. Putin said if Romney is elected “the missile defense system will definitely be directed against Russia.” The wide-ranging interview showed Putin’s acerbic and combative side, 놀이터 토토 particularly on the issue of the two-year prison sentence imposed last month on three members of the provocateur band Pussy Riot for their “punk prayer” prank in Moscow’s main cathedral entreating the Virgin Mary to save Russia from Putin. Their conviction brought widespread criticism of Russia for stifling opposition and free speech. Putin briefly sparred with the English-speaking interviewer over how the band’s name could be translated into Russian, saying “I think you wouldn’t...

(CBS/AP) For everyone out there who wants their MTV with a little more positivity, there’s a new award at the VMAs that rewards the best video with a message. When Chicago-based rock act Rise Against began writing a song about suicide among gay teens, the band’s lead singer tried to block out the event that inspired the tune — the death of a gay friend. “His loss was something big to me,” said Tim McIlrath. Pictures: 2010 VMAs HighlightsPictures: MTV VMAs Red Carpet 2010 But the band members wanted to get out the message, so they made a gripping video for “Make It Stop (September’s Children)” featuring three teens bullied and at the brink of suicide. Now the video is competing in a new category at the MTV Video Music Awards: the aforementioned best video with a message award. It highlights music videos sending messages of positivity and self-empowerment and 홀덤 raising awareness about social issues that affect today’s youth. “I hope that category sticks around and I hope it gives artists something to aim for,” said McIlrath, who teamed with the It Gets Better Project for the music video. MTV President Stephen Friedman says the new category is proving popular among voters this year. “I have to tell you in the voting, this category catapulted. It was among the top three or four categories — millions and millions...

(AP) WASHINGTON – Iran is playing a growing role supporting the Syrian regime and is helping to build and train a militia to fight opposition forces, U.S. defense officials said Tuesday. Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told Pentagon reporters that the militia, which is generally made up of Syrian Shiite forces, is being used to take the pressure off the Syrian regime forces, which have been at war for almost 18 months. “Any army would be taxed with that kind of pace,” Dempsey said. “They are having re-supply problems, they are having morale problems, they are having the kind of wear-and-tear that would come of being in a fight for as long as they have.” Dempsey also said that it appears Syrian rebels were able to shoot down a Syrian warplane, but said he has seen no indication that they are armed with heavy weapons or surface-to-air missiles, at least not yet. He says the MiG fighter could have been shot down with small arms fire. Syria has blamed the crash on a technical malfunction, but Dempsey said the cause “didn’t appear to be mechanical.” U.S. lifts sanctions on ex-Syria PMDefected PM says Assad regime on “verge of collapse”Panetta: Syria no-fly-zone “not on the front burner”Iran: “Retired” elite soldiers among 48 hostages held by Syria rebels Dempsey and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta voiced...

Here on the East Coast, most of us have little choice but to stay inside – and wait out the wrath of Irene. But elsewhere, you can go to the movies. David Edelstein has some recommendations … It has been a loud, 3-D summer at the multiplex, and while I’m perfectly receptive to the odd $150 million superhero picture, it wasn’t so odd this summer, it was the norm – and I’m ready for movies that aren’t in-your-face with a surcharge for the glasses. The comedy “Our Idiot Brother” won’t win any prizes, but its mellow vibe is a blessed relief. Paul Rudd plays Ned, a friendly, go-along-to-get-along screw-up of a brother to three high-strung sisters played by three appealing actresses: Emily Mortimer, Elizabeth Banks and Zooey Deschanel. Ned goes to prison after a cop in uniform approaches him to buy dope. Really! See for yourself: … No, stop the clip. It’s too painful. Anyway, when Ned gets out of jail he visits his sisters and messes up their lives by being too guilessly honest. He undermines their very foundations. This being a comedy, family ties strengthen rather than strangle. The uplift would be hard to buy if Rudd weren’t so lovable. I have no idea what he’s like in life, but I’d be stricken to hear he’s a jerk: It would be such an affront to the notion...
