(CBS/AP) MANILA, Philippines – Philippine disaster officials were shifting Friday from rescue work to a massive clean-up of the capital following nonstop rains that left tons of muck and debris from floods littering the city. The torrential monsoon rains that began Sunday left at least 60 people dead in the worst flooding in Manila since 2009. More than half of the sprawling metropolis of 12 million was submerged at the peak of the floods, and schools and offices closed for days. About 2.4 million people in Manila and 맞고게임 nearby provinces have been affected, forcing more than 360,000 to seek shelter in government-run evacuation centers, the Office of Civil Defense reported Friday. The sun was out for a second day Friday, and residents were hard at work fixing disheveled homes and stores in flood-hit communities that resembled a wasteland covered with mounds of mud-caked garbage. “It’s really an eyesore when we saw it from the helicopter,” said civil defense chief Benito Ramos. “There will be no more rescue. (AP) UNITED NATIONS – Former Algerian foreign affairs minister Lakhdar Brahimi is a strong candidate to replace Kofi Annan as peace envoy to Syria, diplomats said Thursday. Diplomats who requested anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly said that Brahimi was a strong possibility, while other contenders are ex-Spanish foreign affairs minister Miguel Angel Moratinos and Spain’s Javier Solana, a former NATO chief and European Union foreign policy head. Annan, a former U.N. secretary-general, announced his resignation last week as joint U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria, ending a frustrating six-month effort that failed to achieve even a temporary cease-fire. He leaves at the end of the month. (CBS) A guitar. A voice. Sometimes that’s all a musician needs to lift the listener to a higher place. Smart lyrics help, too, and Robin Bacior has them. On “Headless Sheep,” she sings about two subjects – a relationship and an unpleasant flight – using direct, uncomplicated imagery. The result is a song that makes listeners feel as if they’re floating through the clouds (but having a much better go of it than Bacior’s protagonist). She’s upfront in the mix, singing with a sweet tone and using layers of harmonies that belie a tough spirit in the lyrics. The few other songs on Bacior’s site fall loosely under the banner of folk or alt-country, but these are definitely pop songs, just with folk-ish instrumentation, including what sounds like upright piano and slide dobro. The 24-year-old has a full-length, “Rest Our Wings,” coming out Nov. 1 on Consonants & Vowels. (CBS/AP) SANTA MONICA, Calif. – Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O’Neal’s son is in jail in Southern California after police stopped him for a traffic violation and allegedly found heroin in his car. Santa Monica police Sgt. Richard Lewis said Redmond O’Neal was pulled over at about 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday after an officer saw him fail to stop for a red light. Police said a search of his car uncovered the drug. The 26-year-old, who is on probation in a previous drug case, was jailed without bail. His lawyer, Richard Pintal, declined to comment to the Associated Press. O’Neal has a history of substance abuse problems. He completed a drug diversion program last year but remains on probation for bringing drugs to a Los Angeles County jail in 2009.
