Designed synthesis of mesoporous solids via nonionic ...Selenium in Power Plant Wastewater Research

Cleveland, OH (PRWEB) – Ohio Lumex has been awarded a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) research grant as part of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. Research will focus on developing novel concepts for online, real-time monitoring of liquid phase selenium in pulverized coal power plant wastewaters.

Selenium is a toxic pollutant released via coal combustion, with coal-fired power plants representing the most significant anthropogenic source of toxic pollution of water bodies. The eventual implementation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency?s (EPA) Steam Power Effluent Limitations Guidelines and Standards (ELGs) will put constraints on allowable selenium concentrations in coal-fired power plant wastewater streams.

The ultimate goal of this 7-month research project is to bring to market new instrumentation for real-time selenium determination.
