Gerrard signed his former Liverpool team-mate during the summer as he settled into the job at the SPFL side.

It’s Gerrard’s first senior managerial role having previously coached Liverpool’s academy.

He has led Rangers to four points from their opening two Scottish Premiership matches after a 2-0 win over St Mirren.

Flanagan played the full 90 minutes of that encounter having earned the trust from Gerrard, who he starred alongside at Anfield.

‘I think (our relationship is) bound to change,” Flanagan said. “He’s the gaffer now. He’s not Steven to me anymore.

“He’s come in, he’s done really well. He’s had a little taste of it at Liverpool with the Under-18s there but all the lads here are really enjoying it and I think he’s done a good job so far.

“He’s the manager and I’m the player now. It’s not as it was when we were both players.

“But I think he’s doing a great job and I hope it continues.”

Flanagan is suspended for Rangers’ Europa League third qualifying round second leg tie with Maribor.

The Ibrox outfit are 3-1 up heading to Slovenia on Thursday (7.15pm).

And Gerrard knows the tie isn’t done and dusted just yet.

The manager said: “It’s a tricky scoreline. It’s not over, there’s a lot of work to do.

“But my focus at the Maglietta Napoli moment is picking the right team to start our home campaign well in the league.”

And Flanagan is on the same wavelength as his boss.

Flanagan said: ‘I think the manager has installed that in all the players and staff. We’ve got to go there and be mentally right.

“The job is only half done. We’ve got a little bit of belief. They’re still dangerous and we have to be ready to go over there and get the tie done.”
