The German returns from illness at Swansea on Saturday in a week where he produced an apparent ultimatum by suggesting he will commit his long-term future to Arsenal if his boss does too.
Arsene Wenger refused to issue an emphatic response to the talented 28-year-old but wants him to become more prolific having only been on target five times in the Premier League so far this season.
‘I think what you want of him is to score goals,” said Wenger. “We all feel certainly that there is still a gap there between what he can do, he is moving in the right way but always, from such a talent, you always want more.
“You feel there is no limitation in his game and so you always say ‘come on give us more’ because you always have feeling he can do more.
“We are all human beings who can improve every day. The problem Maglia PSG 2019 is that we have to first realise if we want more, how we get more and then after, do it.
“He has a passion for the game. You do not get the technique he has just by the gift of God, you have to focus on every single pass you have made since you were a kid to get that touch, technique and vision.
“He has exceptional passion for the quality of the game and he gives you always the feeling that he can make the team improve with the quality of his passes.”
Despite Ozil’s recent comments, Wenger refused to offer any clarification of his own future, with his own contract up in the summer.
“I’m humble enough now at my age to put that into perspective,” he said. ‘I have the experience to see where I can contribute a little, but 99 per cent is from the player, how much does he want it? How much is he ready to put the effort in to get better?
“Most of the time it is the reputation of the club and the kind of football the players feel they will play if they come in, not me as a person.
‘I will always be relaxed on that front because at the end of the day you can show a player how much you want him to stay and after he has to make the decision that you have to accept.
“Sir Alex Ferguson once said I would be a good poker player when I sold Robin van Persie. Maybe he was right!”
One man who knows Ozil well is new Swansea manager Paul Clement, who knows the playmaker well from their time at Real Madrid. “He is really good, but it took him a little bit of time to adapt to the Premier League,” Maglietta inter said Clement.
“There were wonderful players at Real like Isco, Ronaldo, Bale and it was going to be difficult for Ozil to play the regular football he wanted so he moved.”
Clement thought he would be using notes from his festive scouting mission for Bayern Munich on Arsenal in a Champions League last-16 tie next month.
Instead, he has been studying the secret dossier ahead of his Premier League bow today.
Clement watched Arsenal beat West Brom on Boxing Day while he was working as Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant at Bayern, but little did he know that his notes would come in handy in his new role as Swansea head coach.
‘I was at the Emirates as a Bayern member of staff watching Arsenal play West Brom so I have got my notes,” he said. “I’ll be using them for Swansea instead of Bayern and I’ll send Carlo [Ancelotti] a photocopy!”
