Has any team in World Cup history ever been as excited about the usually meaningless third-place play-off as South Korea? Probably not, but the Koreans’ passion, ignited by a wonderful tournament and stoked by their exuberant fans, is more than justified.

Their coach Guus Hiddink maintains his team will be going all out for a win: “It will be a 50-50 game because they have the same style, they like to attack as well, they have technically skilled players. But we were supported so nicely in this tournament that we feel obliged to go more than 100% for third place.”

The supporters have been a major force in Korea’s rise, and have fotballdrakter barn med shown no signs of despondency despite their team’s semi-final defeat.

All flights from Seoul to Daegu have been snapped up, and police are expecting huge crowds outside the stadium and in front of giant screens throughout the country, for a game that marks several notable goodbyes. Hiddink will take an emotional final curtain, and it may well be the last international appearance for Hong Myung-bo and Hwang Sun-hong.

Unlikely though it would have sounded even a year ago, it is Hiddink’s departure that will be the biggest cause for regret. Awards for the Dutchman are flowing as smoothly as Korea’s football: an honorary degree in management here, a statue there. There have even been calls for Hiddink to stand in next year’s presidential elections, an offer he will politely refuse.

For his farewell match the coach is likely to give the Korean faithful a taste of the future, with the youngsters Lee Chun-soo and Cha Doo-ri expected to begin up front.

Hiddink has been there before, of course – he led Holland to defeat against Croatia in 1998’s third-place match, but believes the play-off has far more relevance to his current charges than it did for his fellow countrymen. “[We] take this third place very seriously… it will be a very tough game but I think there’s a lot of Fotballdrakter barn prestige for third place,” Hiddink said.

Like South Korea, who had never won a World Cup match until five weeks ago, Turkey are also in unfamiliar territory, and will take on the Koreans without perhaps their best player. Hasan Sas misses out through suspension after his lunging tackle on Denilson at the end of the semi-final.

With no pressure to get a result – “we are just delighted to have got to the semi-finals,” says Ali Ismet Ural, a Turkish journalist – the Turks are likely to showcase their best football. Asked if this could be the best game of the World Cup, their coach Senol Gunes’s response was emphatic: “Absolutely.”
