FC Barcelona right-back, Dani Alves has explained why he stayed at the Catalan giants, and what Lionel Messi advised him to do.

The 32-year-old stated two weeks ago that he was unlikely to stay at Camp Nou, but then made a U-turn and signed a two-year contract extension with an optional third year.

He explained, “Messi told me: ‘Dani, stay, where you will be better than here?

“I am where I feel loved. My heart told me to stay.

“I had doubts, but at the celebration it became clear to me that the people valued me.”

The Brazilian further explained that during Barcelona’s treble celebrations he realised how much he is loved by the club’s fans.

“There was an accumulation of positive factors that made me stay. I still have plenty of things to give to this club,” he added.

“At moments the club and the fans made me doubt if I should stay. I managed to turn that around by working.

“It wasn’t a fight between me and the club. If this were about money I wouldn’t be here. But I’m following my heart.”

The Brazilian has made 343 appearances for Barcelona since joining them from Sevilla for €35,5 million in 2008 – collecting 19 trophies.
