9 months agoManchester United signed Ronaldo from Sporting Lisbon back in 2003, giving him the club’s famous No 7 shirt previously worn by club icons such as David Beckham, Eric Cantona and George Best.

The Red Devils then moulded the then 18-year-old into one of the best players in the world, with Ronaldo helping them win three Premier League titles during his six-year stint at Old Trafford.

At first, Ronaldo took time to adjust to the Premier League, being accused of focusing too much on tricks Magliette Dortmund Bambino and flicks at Manchester United.

By the time he left for Real Madrid in 2009, though, the now 33-year-old was one of the best players in world football.

And Cristiano Ronaldo has now opened up on how criticism from Ferguson helped him scale new heights.

He said: “Of course, in the beginning of my career he was so important to me because I moved from Sporting to Manchester and had that Portuguese mentality – too many stepovers, decision making was not the best.

“So he taught me how to do it. In the Premier League they don’t fall over so easy, they are tough.

“As I’ve said many times, he taught me everything.

“He was like a father to me. He helped me a lot at Manchester United.”

Ferguson won the lot at United, helping them dethrone Liverpool as England’s biggest club.

And, in his 2013 autobiography, the Scot lauded Ronaldo for his attitude and application.

He wrote: “Cristiano was the most gifted player I managed.

“He surpassed all the other great Magliette Bayer Leverkusen ones I coached at United – and I had many.

“The only ones who could be placed near him would be a couple of the home-produced players, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

“That’s because they contributed so prodigiously to Manchester United for two decades.”

Ronaldo has since left Real for a new challenge with Juventus.

And, having failed to score on his debut against Chievo on Sunday, he is now targeting a goal against Lazio when the Serie A giants lock horns this weekend (Saturday, 5:15pm).
