José Mourinho has accused his title rival Arsène Wenger of being a “specialist in failure”. The Portuguese manager hit back after Wenger had earlier said the league title was “Chelsea’s to lose” despite Mourinho’s protestations to the contrary.

Asked why his rivals were insisting they were not contenders, the Arsenal manager said: “It is a fear to fail.” Mourinho’s response Barcelona Fodboldtrøjer was to say of the Frenchman: “He is a specialist in failure. I’m not. So if supposing he’s right and I’m afraid of failure, it’s because I don’t fail many times. So maybe he’s right. I’m not used to failing.

“But the reality is he’s a specialist because, eight years without a piece of silverware, that’s failure. If I did that in Chelsea I’d leave and not come back.”

Wenger had attempted to transfer the pressure on to the league leaders by saying that the title race was “very open, only Chelsea can lose it because they are in front and all the other teams can win it”.

Mourinho had said after beating Manchester City that all the pressure Tottenham Fodboldtrøjer was on Arsenal and Manuel Pellegrini’s Manchester City side in the title race but Wenger said: “If you’re not in the race you cannot lose it; if you declare yourself not in the race you cannot lose it, simple as that.”

Chelsea currently lead the table by one point over Arsenal, with City three points off the top and Liverpool four.
