The Frenchman took charge of his final Gunners game last weekend, with Arsenal beating Huddersfield 1-0.

Wenger will leave the Emirates after 22 impressive years in charge, which saw the Gunners win 10 major trophies.

The 68-year-old made some fine signings during his time in north London, bringing the likes of Thierry Henry, Cesc Fabregas and Patrick Vieira to Arsenal.

However, Wenger says he regrets not Juventus målvaktskläder signing Real Madrid star Ronaldo, claiming a deal was close for the Portugal talisman.

‘I nearly signed Ronaldo and I think that would have changed the history of Arsenal Football Club,” Wenger said to Arsenal fans in a Q&A.

“The Ronaldo story was very, very close.”

Wenger wanted to sign Ronaldo while he was at Sporting Lisbon, but missed out when he joined Manchester United.

The Portugal star then developed into one of the best players in history while in Manchester before moving to Real Madrid.

He has now won the joint-most Ballon d’Or awards with five alongside Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo has also become Real’s all-time leading goalscorer, while winning the Champions League three times during his time at the Bernabeu.

Wenger also revealed that Arsenal were interested in signing Barcelona Liverpool tröja superstar Messi.

The Gunners tried to land the Argentina international after bringing Fabregas to Arsenal, however, it didn’t work out.

He added: “[Lionel] Messi as well, because we were interested in him.

“When Fabregas came here we asked Messi and [Gerard] Pique to join as well, that didn’t work.”

Arsenal are hoping to announce Wenger’s replacement at the Emirates before the World Cup begins next month.
