(CBS) It’s fitting that the word “ambient” is in the title of the latest The War On Drugs album. The tracks on “Slave Ambient” have layers and layers of keyboards and guitars that surround the listener. There’s also enough going on with the percussion to keep things moving.

(Listen to The War On Drugs’ “Come to the City” below.)

The War On Drugs’ “Slave Ambient” feels a lot like the late 1980s duo David & David and David Baerwald’s solo work – with different subject matter – right down to the way the pleasantly weary vocals cut through the mix. There’s also a Daniel Lanois-esque feel to the production (read: lots of reverb).

The Philadelphia-based The War on Drugs is a vehicle for Adam Granduciel, the band’s frontman and guitarist. He’s helped out on here by multi-instrumentalists Robbie Bennett and Dave Hartley, and drummer Mike Zanghi. “Slave Ambient” is The War On Drugs’ second full-length. It was released in August 2011.
