“The Kennedys” was one of six nominees for Outstanding Miniseries or Movie and stars Greg Kinnear and Barry Pepper were nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie. Kinnear played President John F. Kennedy and Pepper played his brother Robert, the attorney general.

Actor Tom Wilkinson, who played their father, Joseph P. Kennedy, was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie.

The eight-episode drama, which also starred Katie Holmes as Jacqueline Kennedy, was created for the History channels in the U.S. and Canada. But History later announced that it would not show the series in this country. It said the finished product was not right for the History channel brand.

Media reports said pressure from the Kennedy family caused the reversal. Kennedy family members reportedly said the scripts contained factual errors and were overly critical of the family.

The series aired on schedule in Canada and other countries.

After various broadcasters declined to pick it up,, US rights were purchased by ReelzChannel, which is seen in about 60 million homes. The first episode aired April 3.
