Bas Dost scored four goals including a stoppage-time winner to give Wolfsburg a remarkable 5-4 win at Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.

Second-placed Wolfsburg led 3-0 after half an hour and then 4-2, before Leverkusen, for whom Son Heung-min scored a hat-trick, pegged them back to 4-4 following Karim Bellarabi’s 72nd-minute equaliser.

The home side’s brilliant Chelsea fotbollströja comeback turned sour after Emir Spahic earned a second yellow card in the 82nd minute. Dost was quick to capitalise, sneaking in to flick home the winner at the near post with the last kick of a thrilling game.

“It was a crazy game,” Dost said. “The first half was brilliant, but we need to forget the second. We didn’t play football any more. But still we scored five goals in an away game. I’m happy about that. We’re going for the Champions League.”

The Leverkusen coach, Roger Schmidt, said: “Unfortunately we weren’t able to claim the point, not for the point’s sake, but for the morale it Manchester City fotbollströja would have given us.”

The result leaves Leverkusen sixth in the Bundesliga table, but keeps Wolfsburg clinging on to Bayern Munich’s tail in the race for the title. The Wolves remain eight points behind the leaders after Pep Guardiola’s side recorded their biggest league win for 30 years in an 8-0 rout of Hamburg.
